Hi, I am considering overclocking my Notebook. But Im a total beginner to all this. I dont want to do anything too much but just try and get a bit more out of this snail I use. I would like to ask if any of you real Geeks or Experts could give me a hand(via advice throughout the course of it). I will probably need quite a bit of help and assistance as I am far from an expert. I just want to go slowly and learn this as best as possible. Hopefully if it works for the best I will attempt this with a desktop in the future. I have read ACE`s guide and have a basic understanding of it but not 100% with it as its a lot to take in. I decided to this through another thread I posted in hardware in case you want to read that or my specs heres a link to that:- http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=122944

So heres my first round of questions! :-
(1)What software should I download to undertake this job, do I need a program to edit the BIOS as suggested? Will I need something to test stability? Will I need something other than S/I/W to get system Information? Will I need anything else? Preferably freeware.
(2)How do I find my FSB and Multiplier figures? I have a CeleronM1500mhz
(3)Will I need to open my system at all and mess about with electronics? For me thats a no, no, Ill just break it!

I would really truly appreciate your assistance or advice(only if you know your stuff!). I dont want to go OTT, making my system run like the enterprise! I just want to push it a bit but without having to add extra fans and all that. I was hoping to get it nearer to 2ghz as I was told I could do this without producing too much heat.

    Thanks ;)

PS > I wont blame u if I blow my computer up! lol!

Overclocking + Notebooks = not a good idea.

All those components, encased in such a small area, produce enough heat the way it is. You're just asking for trouble when you start to overclock a notebook.

not quite true. if he wants, there is a series of pentium m chips that are highly overclockable by doing a pin-mod to get them from i think a 133-200fsb... if not higher.

i wouldent but if you must download clock gen.

just remember when you raise your fsb. your agp and pci frequencys also climb unless you got a agp/pci lock but you dont since laptops dont have overclocking in mind. and its got a oem bios from who made the pc who got rid of all that.

My advice is dont try to oc it unless you can risk trashing that pc. i had a old mobo that dident have pci/agp locks on it and ran it a 300fsb not to long and after a little while the onboard lan went out and the agp messed up.

also remember. raising the FSB also raises the pci, pcie, agp frequencys "if no lock is present" and it also raises your ram speed unless you can drop the ram to a lower divider.

It's possible to pin mode from 400mhz to 533mhz but I believe you need a variation of the 915i chipset. I don't know much about it, but I don't think the OP was looking for something in that manner. He says he's a total beginner and probably wouldn't want to go beyond making a few changes in the BIOS.

"...(3)Will I need to open my system at all and mess about with electronics? For me thats a no, no, Ill just break it!..."

If the OP wants to dive into hardware modifications, then all the power to him. However, it is not going to be as simple making a few software changes.

You guys really know how to put a guy off something! :D

I just downloaded Clockgen. Not to alter anything just to look around the program, seems really complicated to use. Whilst on that site I also downloaded PC Wizard 2007 from the same site to see if I can find out more details on my computer. I allready have SIW but thought this may tell me more detail on the hardware. Anyways I just looked at the temperature sensors and its saying my proccesor is 73 degrees C! Its only been on for 40 minutes! Surely that cant be right? and if it is it cant be healthy! Also Everest was saying 70+ the other day I opened my system there is no dust or anything and my fan works fine.

WTF is going on there, I have done nothing to this since it was bought? confused

I just found out that a Pentium M and Celeron M have a normal, safe operating temperature of 40 to 85 degrees! I was told by someone on here it (in another thread) it should be under 60? Which is correct?

Sorry to post again like this, its not very polite I understand?

Being a notebook, I think your temps are safe. My Core Duo notebook runs on the hot side, around 70C load. Just make sure it doesn't go over 85 and you should be ok.

I dont think I am going to risk overclocking this, but out of intrest could you tell me if this is right the way I have it in my head. As I will be buying a desktop soon and this could be handy:-

From PC Wizard i have found out that:-
Multipler = 15 (Multiplier is fixed)
    Bus Speed = 100mhz
    SSB Frequency = 400mhz (QDR)
    My Ram = DDR-SDRAM PC-2700 (166 MHz) - [DDR-333]

    So 15 x 100mhz = 1500mhz (my processor) is that correct?
    Also what is SSB Frequency?
If the multiplier is fixed do you have to increase bus speed to overclock?
Am I rigt in thinking bus speed could not exceed 166mhz due to the hard disk speed?

    Thanks I know I am a pest! :D ;)
