I have a Dell D600 that I purchased used so I have no back up discs, OS disc etc. Recently it failed to start up. I did a diagnostic and came up w/ DST Short Status Test failure. I understand it needs a new HD.

Is there a way to recover the OS from this failed drive? I am thinking no and it is not worth trying to recover the laptop. Any advice would be appreciated.

No I purchased it used from a corporte user, so no recovery discs. Came as s w/ power cord. I've had it for 6 months to a year and worked okay just slow than other PC's in the house. I will try to contact Dell directly to see what they say I guess.

We use d630s at work, maybe I can find a recovery disk that may work.

Is the OS within a recovery partition on the HDD?
