I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my old PC. I'm really stoked about tinkering with this. My only problem is I don't have a internet connection with this computer. Is it possible to download a linux file from another computer that has Windows Vista and transfer the file onto a USB drive and install the file onto my Linux PC? It seems if you really want to experience Ubuntu at it's fullest potential, you have to have an internet connection. Any advice would be great. (also, some links for some solid tutorials on Ubuntu would be great)
    Thanks!!

Linux by design will find and configure a network. If you have the ethernet plugged in, you will be on line in no time.

Wireless needs some tweaking, but is not too difficult. (not like it used to be about 8 years ago, at least :p )

normally Ubuntu configures itself automatically for wireless and ethernet. There is a network icon on the upper right corner of the screen, does it detect any networks?

I don't have a wireless connection. My reason is is that I'm still on dial up. (I know, it's sad...) I just wanted to know if I can download a file with my other computer that has a dial up connection with Windows Vista. Transfer the file onto a USB drive and transfer it into my old computer with Linux Ubuntu. Any advice would be helpful.

Here is how to set up gnome-ppp on Ubuntu 9.10.

The file is 324K and could be downloaded to a thumbdrive, then installed on your system. I have successfully used PPP in Linux, but it has been over 10 years. It has not changed much and the information is similar to what you would need in Windows.

Dial in number (toll charges may apply if you do not select a local number)

    Username

    Password

When I was last on dialup, I found my dialin was only at 21K tops. $15 for a new modem from NewEgg brought me back up to 43K.

    ;)
