New user, Which AV to use???

Okay so I've tried a few AV softwares out there. I used norton, but that one takes up too much memory and slows me down. I used to use zone alarm and that didn't seem to stop anything. Now I'm using McAffe and it's operating like Norton did. I wanna know if there is an anti-virus out there that's worth a damn and doesn't go on "autorun" and steal all my resources from me?
