sorry if this has been posted before.

My computer is pretty old, it's a 2002 sony vaio.
    pentium 4 1.6ghz
    512 ddr ram
    agp 2.0 4x
    17" LCD
    (dunno what else)

So I bought a new geforce fx5200 128mb 8x (dunno if this is the prob, but it does say that it can run on 4x) video card today. Took out my old geforce mx440 64mb 4x agp. Normally with my mx440, my res set at 1280x1024 and the text was crisp, but after i installed the geforcefx, the text is slightly blurry and the performance is not that great either. I get the same fps in counter-strike than i did with my old video card, which is 60max fps. i installed the drivers on the cd and even downloaded the newer ones on the nvidia site. i'm sorry if i left anything out but please help me so i can return in time, thanks in advance.

Did you uninstall the old driver? If not uninstall all geforce drivers & try again.

The problem with multiplayer games is they are very cpu intensive, its your cpu that has to do all the work, unlike single player games everything thats happening off screen i.e what all the other players are doing still for the most part has to be done irrellavent of what you can see,you can test this by observing your framrate while connecting to a fast server with few players and compare that to the same server with 32 or 64 players, your framerate should drop substantially

To test how much extra video perfromance your new card gives you,you need to run a video testing program

For image sharpening just go into the nvidia control panel\colour correction\and slide the image sharpener to sharper :)

At 10 x 7 32 bit the 5200 should score around 4-5000 on 3dmark 2001se if it does you know your card is installed correctly if it doesnt you should start troubleshooting :)

Just came across this. It is for NT, 2000, XP.

Open the root partition of your hard drive (normally C:\) and find the file called "BOOT.INI". For XP you need to enable hidden files under Folder/Options. Back this file just in case.

Right-click on the file. Select Properties and uncheck "Read-only" then click OK.

Open the file in Notepad (Right click/Open) and under the [operating systems] section you will find a list of all the installed operating systems. For example:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

    From there add /BASEVIDEO

The computer starts up using the standard VGA video driver. Use this if you have installed a graphics driver that is not working.

Reboot & see if you still have a problem. That should give you something to start with.

mm ok it's still not working. i can sharpen it, but it doesn't take away the fact that it IS blurry, and even sharpening it doesn't help that much, it just looks too sharp. as for the 3dmark2001, i got a 4000 but that doesn't prove much because the games are quite blurry as well and all of them have low fps, so i don't know what's going on. is it because it's only being run at 4x? so the performance is like half or something.

I had problems with crappy video when I installed that exact model card. Here's what fixed things for me:

Go to the Nvidia FX tab, the list will pop up to the left, click on color correction, click the set to defaults for all channels, apply, ok, reboot.

You have to select ALL and ALL Channels in the top two drop box's and the bottom one should be standard.

If Restore Defaults button is still greyed out then just move one of the sliders a bit and it will come up as available. Click Restore Defaults then Apply.

Then on that same screen with it still set to All and All Channels set the bottom to Advanced instead of Standard and do the same thing, Restore Defaults.

Let us know how it goes.

I still have the same problem...text a bit blurry, performance is lacking.

Okay I figured out what the problem might possibly be.

I just downgraded from my MX440 to a FX5200. I was looking up some specs and reviews comparing the two and they are very similiar, if not the MX is better. According to the specs, the fill rate (don't know what this really means but I'm sure the more the better) for both are the same, at 1.1billion texels/sec and 6.4GB/sec for memory bandwidth (don't know what this is either). I was reading an online review comparing the FX and MX and it said, "...but I can assure you the results were much lower than MX440" And I guess it's also the fact that my motherboard is 4x so having a video card specifically designed for 4x is better than one that's 8x. I'm not sure, but that's what I'm thinking so I just wished I did some more research before so I don't have to go refund this piece of crap.

Also, thanks to all those who have read this and tried to help me.

And oh I got a 4118 for the 3dmark01 on the FX5200 and then I tried it again with my MX440 and got a 4700. So my two cents would be, don't be cheap like me. If you want a good video card pay more than 65 dollars and you won't regret it.
