I just bought a new video card agp x1650 but it wont fit on my asus p5vdcmx mobo ? theres a lever thing on the end of the slot that stops the card from fitting in? can I remove that lever at the end of the slot? Is there a purpose for that being there?

it doesnt say it on the website , but in the picture you can see a brown slot next to the pci-e 1x slot. Which in my motherboard manual claims to be a agp 4x/8x slot compatible ??? I can take pics if needed to better help ?

that extra tab is supposed to fit over the end of the slot, but yours might be too close together?? not saying you didnt try but you did right? your mobo does have agp...and the agp card should fit in that slot.

lol yeh I figured that one out just punched it in with a bit of a jiggle as well. But now after installing all the drivers it works for 20 seconds after I have logged in then screen gets some lines and then blur and then blank screen of death ??? Do i need to remove drivers for the via integrated graphics ? and are there settings need to be changed? or is the card stuffed ?

So I downloaded your mobo manual and you are correct... that's the good news; however, you still may have the wrong card and that may be why it doesn't fit. Here's why. There are different AGP standards, and each standard supports a different voltage and hardware keying so if the voltage rating and hardware keying of the card you purchased doesn't match the mobo requirements, the card won't fit. See here for a chart that explains further: http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_AGP.html

Now, your mobo documentation provides a caution that only 1.5v agp cards are supported and 3.3v agp cards are not supported. Also, note that the notches are different for each of these cards so if you have purchased a 3.3v agp card it will not work (or fit).

the card fits now it just goes blank screen after about 20 seconds of usage???

Ok; that's good. Does your card require an external voltage source and, if so, did you connect it? Also, did you disable integrated graphics in the bios and/or tell your bios to search for agp first (different bios's use different wordings)?

ucanfixit is on to something.... I have installed MANY Radeon x1650 AGP cards, most of 'em about 2-3 years ago when they were new on the market and people bought 'em up like crazy... anyway, most of them (all the ones from Sapphire) needed to be connected to the power supply via a 4pin floppy drive type of power connector. An extra adapter shipped in the box with these cards.... If your power supply isn't at least 350w, you may need to upgrade, especially if it's a stock PSU; these are usually grossly underpowered....

yes I connected the power supply but still it is just working for like 30 seconds after login ??? I dont know much but I reckon its overheating is this possible ? it seems real hot after a short time? Im thinking of selling it , and getting a completely top of the range gaming system with liquid cooling instead my pc sounding like a boeing 747 aeroplane!

It could be that your power supply is under-powered. What happens in safe mode? If the same things happen in safe mode, then we'd know for sure if it's a hardware problem or a windows/driver/software problem.... Yes, it is possible for it to reach critical temps in 30 seconds or so. Try installing ATI Tray Tools. It can display the video card's temp in real time and let you know how hot it gets before it cuts out. Download ATI Tray Tools from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATI_Tray_Tools_d4569.html It's totally free and pretty easy to use....

I am using 500w power supply. I tried in safe mode and got at least 30 mins of use"" thats something. It couldnt run company of heroes because of error saying hardware problem. I will try installing new windows since the one i am currently running has been customized, with alot of default windows files, settings and services changed&removed. ati tray tools was not able to run, I tried low level driver installer but it just hung after i tried to start it ? if it doesnt work on new windows then it shall go on to the ebay market place!
