I would like some more information regarding the "Folding" project. I'm a dummy and don't know a thing about this sort of thing:

Does my computer have to be connected to the internet to be used for this project? ( I just have a dial-up connection and cannot be online all the time)

My computer is not a new one, nor is it a "souped up" one......can it still be of use?

Do I have to stay off the computer during certain times or what? Can it just be suspended while I'm using the computer and then resume when I'm finished?

    Is it safe?

How much memory is needed?.....RAM, Hard Drive, whatever?

NO, you can connect perodically and submit your units.
yes, but it will take time to produce results.

the client should use only idle CPU resources but disabling it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't see how could be harmful

    what do you have?

    Yes its SAFE

Ok this is how it works,
you only need to be online to recieve a work unit,,
then connect again when the work unit is complete, to send the results back !!!.

If you find it slows your system, there are adjustments you can make to limit the processor , or can pause work unit. And just continue.

Also if you run the program, it runs in the background
with a lovely interface to track your completion rate of a unit

Please PM me for further information.

I will provide you with the best client to run on your PC, Glenn

Any Computer can run this project from a older P2 class computer to the most advanced system's that are produced today, all helps !!!.

    Glenn

My computer has a 9.3 GB hard drive and 224 MG RAM. I run Windows 98 SE and have a Celeron processor. I do need to clean house as I only have 69% free right now....there is a bunch of junk that needs to be cleaned out.
(Would like to get a new computer but it's not in the budget at this time, so have to make do with what I have.)

Butterfly your system is quite capable of running the client enough disk space and the celeron processor will be fine,,,just the faster the processor the faster the completion of a data unit ,its a small download,,and in total will use 1meg of disk space to accomodate the data files total .

    GO HERE

    http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html

DL the Windows 98/ME Graphical client 4.0 follow the install steps and as your user name please use you MG user nickname,,,and the team # 12072
so we know who you are and the proper credit will be applied to our team.

Any other questions please don't hesitate to ask, Glenn :) :) :)

will be glad to have you aboard !!!!

    Hi folks!
Well, I finally got around to downloading and installing......I hope I did everything right. It seems to be working in the background and I'm going to just try to go about my business and see if I have any more questions.......thanks for all you've done so far!! You are all great help and can't fully express how much I appreciate your kindness and friendliness!!

    Hey butterfly123:
I'm on the folding team here at MajorGeeks. Welcome aboard. And, feel free to "join in the fray" in the folding threads.

Hey... if you hang around this site, these guys will have you running that rig top notch... no spyware, no virus... you can learn to tweak here, too, as hard as you like.

Are you using the Firefox browser yet?
    Tabbed browsing!
Here is the link, if you are new to it:

Yes, I finally got Mozilla Firefox installed and am using it. I tried it before and just couldn't get things going, so uninstalled and left it alone for a while.....but decided to try again and I think this is a slightly different version.......seems to be working good so far. I'm still feeling my way around, learning how things work. I don't have all the plug-ins yet, but will get those as I need them.

As for the Folding project.....it's working, I guess.....that's what it says, anyway. I normally shut my computer down overnight, but suppose I should leave it on now, huh? What do I do if I have to reboot? Does it just stop what it's doing or do I have to do something?

I'm not very wise in the technical area......I'm pretty good with software I know and love to learn about new programs, but you can lose me pretty quick when you get technical on me......I'm not one of you young people who have worked on computers most of your life.....I was 45 before I touched a computer. Do have a stepson with a Masters in Computer Science and a son-in-law who works for an internet company, so they have helped me a lot, when they can, but they live in different states. That's why I am so glad to have found MG. Thanks again!

Your quite welcome,,,,and also welcome to the folding team !!! one last thing to check is to make sure the team number is correct in the panel , you can do so by right clicking the flower in the taskbar and go to config, or on the display screen right click and go to config,,while in config please look around and click where it says to use explorers settings, you can also control the amount of prosser use there as well.,you have plenty of time, will need the information before the unit sends back,,any questions please feel free to ask , Glenn,,

PS nite all untill tomorrow, GK

    edit'

if you let run will continue to process overnight,,,also if you reboot will pick up where it left off,,,niters

Me again.....I'm folding........slowly compared to most of you, I'm sure, but I'm pluggin' away.
I did all that you mentioned and feel quite certain I've got that okay.......does anything need to be changed or marked in the Advanced tab?
I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean by prosser.....is that short for processor?......sorry to be so stupid.
    Thanks again for your help.

Hello Butterfly, welcome back ,,, I will certantly answer any questions about folding,,,on the advanced tab, there is a slider bar,,this bar controls the amount of your system resourses that are allocated to the program, Question on the front pretty display , do you show and work units that show complete?? if so you should be on the score boards, please get back to me and will advise what to do next, Glenn

  17. butterfly123

No, none complete yet.......I have to admit I've shut down overnight so far......habit, I guess. When it gets to 100percent, will it automatically send the results when I go online? And does it automatically download another work unit? I haven't gone to the Stanford site lately, but when I was there a couple days ago I wasn't on the team list, so assumed that would happen after I have finished a unit.....if this correct?

If you have your name (butterfly)and the team # 12072 enter onto the config panel, once you complete a work unit, it will ask for connection to the net if you are on dial up, or on cable, would do by it self, in the properties of the config panel you can set to promp for internet, or auto send in,after completion you will appear on the stats page,,,also will get a new work unit on its own, Glenn
PS all helps...even is you shut down at night,,,with your celeron, would make better strides if left on, Glenn.....glad to have you aboard !!!

I guess I'm just a little uneasy about leaving it totally unattended.....is it hard on a processer to leave it on like that? I do know some people who never turn their computer off, but they have also had problems and/or had to replace them, and I just cannot afford to do that at this point.......and I would really miss having this silly thing to tinker with. :)>)

Computers if store bought should have proper safeguards to handle the heat the processor may generate from the folding prosess,:)

In general leaving a computer on will cause no harm,,in fact the cycling of the componants on and off, genterate a cold state of componants, then they get hot,,this retates to a cycling of the componants that can actually be detromental the the componant parts in the long run, If you are uncomfortable leaving on , follow your feelings , and just fold work units for Stanford during the day.:)

The major danger of leaving a system on all the time is:

If connected to internet 24/7 a possibility for a security breach,,this may have been your friends problems, may want to ask them if they left computer on and connected to a cable modem or ADSL line, This would enable a hacker to try to gain acces to thier PC and may have caused thier related problems:rolleyes: .

Personally I have one computer in my den that has been left on for the past 4 years LOL,,,and still chugging along, I do disable the internet on this pc while not needed to be online.

Also I have my P4 BRAND NEW Gateway laptop that is on 24/7 as well,,,also showing no signs of failure, once again not online when not in use !

My Dad has a older P3 and has also been ON for years without fault.

So in short, there can always be a faulty part in a PC that will give way, like any other electronic device.. that could fail even while you are awake online and using your computer. Hopefully this will not happen to you or anyone else that may leave a computer on 24/7. LIKE ME !! LOL,,, Glenn:) :)

I do understand your concerns about leaving your computer on,,,that ok,,shut it down, safeguarding yourself is more important the a FOLDING project !!!

Just signed up. I'm the network admin at work and I have my machine on 24 hours a day so it should help the project. I may add it to a few other machines if it tests out OK on this one. I wouldn't recommend people do this at work normally, unless you are the guy in charge. Some companies might look down upon it. Mine does not.

I've been trying to convince the IT staff to put the idle CPU time of the schools 250 P4's (recently upgraded)... they is not liking the idea much.

  24. Kodo

    Kodo SNATCHSQUATCH

of course not. Then their idle cpu time become 100% usage time and you figure running an extra 250 light bulbs costs money :)

Goldie 250 P4's would be indeed TOTALY COOL BEANS LOL..would be in the top 100 in a week LOLOL:D

Folding away, in spite of a brief hiatus because my monitor died and I had to totally shut down for a couple of days while I got a new one. I cannot seem to find the post or PM that had info on the correct items to have marked/inserted in the configuration file.....or did I dream that I saw that? (sometimes those little naps help, you know :)>)

I did change the last setting in the Advanced tab to the Folding@home, which no one said anything about, but it made sense to me to change it.

In Display tab all I changed from the original was adding "Major Geeks Folding Team" in the Main Title area.

Anything else that needs to be changed?

Thanks again for all your help.......I appreciate it greatly!!

Hi Butterfly, nice to hear from you again !!!:) Yes Folding at home,,sorry if i missed that directive,,, ,,,,also on the config area of the program,,your name and team 12072,,, when finished will send in correctly, The folding at home setting IS correct;) ,, it governs the type of work unit you will recieve next,,,the newer version of the software for win XP no longer has that option,,its auto set to folding at home by default,,,any help needed , when ready to send in, Please ask, Glenn:)

PS sorry to hear of computer problems ,,,bummer:(

    Butterfly, In addition this ::

"In Display tab all I changed from the original was adding "Major Geeks Folding Team" in the Main Title area."

This is only for your desktop display on the Graphic Panel,,,it has nothing to do with any configuration, for running, sending or recieving a work unit,,strictly, display, Glenn:)

Ugh, yes, what I meant to say is SOME of the schools 250 P4's.... obviously running them all full pelt isn't exacltly plausible for a school :p I mean, a couple of machines in a room would make a big difference.

  31. glennk721

LOL yes Goldie,,a extra machine here and there could help alot, Like my friends new AMD 2500 , I set up for him, every WU counts !!!!,,and points for our folding team ,,,Glenn

Yes, it's all sent and the new one's running already, with no hitches. This is pretty exciting!! I'm even listed already......looks like I got 241 for that one. New one is going to take a while....it's a beaut!!

I'm going to have to pause for while one day this week, though as I need to do some maintenance on this computer....it really needs defragging, and with the Anti Virus software I have I've found it's best to do that kind of thing in Safe Mode.
