New wire and wireless router.

Ok my friends having this trouble he's got 2 computers and can only get on the internet with one while the other is turned off. dsl modem connected to the router and one wire going to the nearest computer while wireless to the one downstairs. IIf the computer upstairs is on the one downstairs wont connect to the internet. And then vicaversa. Any tips?

 

When one coputer is on, can the other get an IP?
When one is online - go to the other and Start>Run> CMD
Do a ipconfig /all
If it is 169.x.x.x , the other pc is not getting an IP.
Go back to the one online and get into router management and turn on the DHCP... maybe?
Check all settings gateway, dns, wireless in enabled, ect ....

 

Could be that the Router’s DHCP is set to deliver only one IP.

Or both computers are set to same static IP.

If it is PPPOE, might be that the authentication is not correctly set.

Im not sure about all DSL providers, but the ones I have dealt with for busnesses only give you one usable IP and DNS. If that is the case here you will have to NAT your IP's. For example: If you provider gave you 24.64.23.1 as your usable address you can translate that into a private (Interanal) address. I do this at home and at a customers site. Its basically allowing multiple IP's with only one external address. Let me know if you need help setting NAT up.

 

had got the problem solved. Was very simpe actually. Brother had broadband and lan enabled the same time
