Just because the card has both VGA and DVI connectors does not necessarily mean it will support full dual monitor functionality. If not, you'll either have to get a card that does, or add a PCI video card to your system. I run dual monitors; I can run separate applications on each monitor. My primary card is nVidia GeForce4 Ti4200 in an AGP slot; the other is nVidia GeForce2 MX400 in a PCI slot. Nice thing about both cards being nVidia is that there's no chance of driver conflict; they both use the same driver.

The FX5200 does support multiple displays. (See technical overview here) You should have an icon in your taskbar. Right-click it. What options does it provide?

options it provides isnt alot and nothing refers to dual monitors only refers if i enable tv then it gives me vga and tv as second but i had 1 monitor on to the vga port and one on to the dvi with a changer

    Are you referring to this:

    nView Multi-Display Technology
The NVIDIA® nView® hardware and software technology combination delivers maximum flexibility for multi-display options, and provides unprecedented end-user control of the desktop experience. NVIDIA GPUs are enabled to support multi-displays, but graphics cards vary. Please verify multi-display support in the graphics card before purchasing.

I see that info listed with many nVidia cards, even ones with only a single monitor connector on them. So, clearly, that does not mean that a particular card has full dual monitor display capability. My interpretation of that is that nVidia cards will support full dual monitor display capability when multiple cards, if necessary, are installed, or, of course, with single cards that are, indeed, designed to support full dual monitor display capability.

As stated in my previous post, I have two cards installed and I have full full dual monitor display capability.

    Try this:

    1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop
    2. Select 'Properties'
    3. Select the 'Settings' tab
    4. Press the 'Advanced' button

What options are listed here? There will probably be quite a few that aren't listed on your taskbar icon. Since Nvidia is in such tight competition with ATI, I would expect that there's even a wizard you could use to set up dual-monitors. (The ATI 9800 Pro I was playing with last night did)

You may be right; you may be wrong (single output cards can support multiple displays with splitters) ;)
Either way, I think you are proposing an expensive, and possibly unnecessary solution when potential software configurations have yet to be exhausted. Why wouldn't we try the cheap/easy things first?

As far I know, this usually does not work, although I can not say for sure whether this is true for all systems. It may depend on the particular motherboard. But, I believe onboard video is usually either automatically disabled when a video card is installed or the user must access his BIOS and disable onboard video before this card will work.

If you want to use your second monitor for fairly undemanding tasks (email, web browser, Word, etc.), you could get something on ebay at very low cost that would work fine. For example, Verto PNY GeForce2 MX200 PCI 32MB Video.

I recently had bought a 32MB card on ebay to install in my mother's computer. The card: GeForce4 MX440 w/32MB. I tested it in my computer; I could see no difference between it and my regular GeForce2 MX400 w/64MB. They both work fine. Just for fun, I also connected a third monitor while testing her card. In other words, I had my AGP card and the two PCI cards installed, and added a 15 inch monitor (normally connected to my old Pentium) to my two 17 inch monitors.

A little more research confirms that the FX5200 does indeed support dual monitor display. What we need to find is the Display Configuration dialog, which gives you options to extend your desktop, clone, or span.

Splitter? Yeah, if you just want to clone the primary display on the second one. That not what he wants; he wants to be able to run separate apps on each monitor. Are you telling me he can do that with a splitter? How much do want to bet?

In my last post, I cited an ebay item. This can be done at very low cost.

Again, extra hardware is not necessary! The card will do what he is trying to do.

What additional research? You already posted that comment, and I replied to it.

There is less need to be antagonistic than there is to buy another video card! Relax, amigo. I'm not saying your way is wrong, but I think you're jumping the gun a bit. Why are you so insistent he spend more money (albeit only a little) on another video card when the software will do it for free? Try following the more information link. This shows that the software SHOULD have the display configuration dialog, which SHOULD have the option to do what the user would like. All without spending any more than he already has on graphics cards.

Well, we need to get tim7611 back in here. We need for him to go to Display Properties, Settings, and post what he sees there. If his card will, in fact, support dual monitors, he should see the two monitors in the Settings panel and he should have the option to extend his desktop onto the second monitor.

tim7611, did we, or I, spoil the party for you?

The nVidia FX5200 will support dual monitors via the DVI output using a DVI splitter, it can if you want clone the desktop or will extend the desktop onto the 2nd screen, which is what we use in work... same 5200 GFX card, DVI splitter cable into one 19" LCD and one 15" LCD, as I need two separate apps on each of the screens.

having said this not all manufacturers of GFX card enable these options on the chip, we would need to know the manufacturer of your card to find the specs they advertise.

A system info utility like EVEREST or SANDRA might give you this information.

So, your card has a VGA connector and a TV Out connector. You do not have a DVI connector, right? That means you can't connect two CRT monitors unless there's some adapter for connecting TV Out to VGA, and I believe there is no such adapter.

Back to square 1: your options are to either get a card that supports two monitors or get a PCI card to support your second monitor. As I mentioned in an earlier post, that can be a rather inexpensive project.

He does have a DVI connector! :)

  21. usafveteran

    usafveteran MajorGeek

Nope. He apparently has a VGA to DVI adapter, which he called a "changer".

  22. Mada_Milty

    Mada_Milty MajorGeek

Let me quote some more! Like alot of cards, this FX 5200 seems to have a VGA out AND a DVI output. The card, if anything like my own, will have come with a DVI to VGA adapter that can be used to connect a normal VGA monitor to the DVI output.

Look carefully at what he is describing. He has a normal VGA connection, a DVI, and a S-Video. Why would his card come with an adapter if it didn't have DVI?

How the heck could he connect this "changer" if there were no DVI?

From what I've understood of post 17 was that he has only been able to do what he is after with the S-Video out. I'm certain your method works usafveteran, but wouldn't you be pissed if you went out and bought another video card, and then later found that you had simply missed a setting? I know I would!

Btw, the pic I posted was an FX 5200.

How about those system info utils, Tim? Have you figured out who manufactured the card?

    How about the display properties?

  27. usafveteran

    usafveteran MajorGeek

Sure, I'd be upset if went out and bought another video card, and then later found that you had simply missed a setting. We have some communication problems here, mainly difficulty in understanding exactly what the OP has due to absence of proper grammer in his posts. His last post clarified what he has. Now, the question is whether the card he has will, in fact, give him full dual monitor functionality.

By the way, there are many FX5200 cards with only VGA and TV Out. Here are some:
    PNY GeForce FX 5200 / 64MB DDR / AGP 8x / VGA / TV-Out / Video Card
    eVGA GeForce FX 5200 / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / TV Out / Video Card
    Leadtek GeForce FX 5200 / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / TV Out / Video Card
    XFX GeForce FX 5200 / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / TV Out / Video Card
