    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Did you knowingly install ChaCha Search Toolbar? If not then uninstall it.

Uninstall the CounterSpy trial program now since we are finished with it

    Also uninstall the below software:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 0 of the READ ME

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger.

Continue by downloading a tool we will need

    - Process Explorer

Extract it to its own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate it later.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

Make sure that one and only one Internet Explorer browser is opened up

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ssqnlmk.dll
    vtsqn.dll
After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under winlogon click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ssqnlmk.dll
    vtsqn.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under Explorer click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Next double click on iexplore.exe and again click once on each instance of any of the below DLL files (if found) and then click the kill button.
    ssqnlmk.dll
    vtsqn.dll

After you have killed all instances of any of the above DLLs under iexplore click ok.
(If you do not find these DLLS, just continue on.)

Now back at the main Process Explorer window look for the below processes and if found right click on them and select Kill Process.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{5CCBDF4D-06C1-1033-0106-050602200002}\Update.exe
    C:\Program Files\Ipwindows\ipwins.exe

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Chaselang thanks so much for the help things are going much better now. I am not being flipped to other pages or hearing jack 9 loud music. However when I make an error in the address bar I am redirected to megago.com can I get rid of this I should see an earthlink page.

Last night I could not remove java or view point, I was told that I did not have permission even as administrator. Today somehow I was able to do it. I am a chacha guide so I need and kept that toolbar. I did not have trouble with any of the proceedures I am attaching the requested logs for any further cleanup before I move to #8.

    I have a few questions:
    1. I have read about free software and sites that can be used for safe surfing [tor] etc. are these safe and effective. Do they scan before you do downloads etc. Please advise, I read about them in PCWORLD <www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?comman=viewArticleBasic&articleID=90127788pagenumber=2> I would consider this because I am to poor for cable and watch most tv and movies on the internet[most likely how i got infected, I know the site that did it, episode.net]

2.My old machine is also infected not as bad as the new [no flipping, music.winpro etc]I want to clean it off but it has thousands of files and it takes hours to do the scans but I will start and get back in line when I am finished. My problem is that I had a new hard drive added 6 months ago upgrading to xp but kept the old drive in that originally ran under ME. The computer will not let me delete cookies history or anything from the old drive I get and error. Please tell me how I can clean this up so I can complete the prep work to get in line again.

    3. How can I learn more about how to do all this and more about XP which I only started using 6 months ago. I do not want to remain ignorant. Please advise. Does this board have a training mentoring program for newbies like me?

thanks again for all you have done and will do
    eden

I'm not sure if this is a malware problem or not. Let's first finish cleaning up all you remaining malware and then see what happens.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to. Please be specific and state what program you are talking about. The link you gave is not a valid link.

If you have proper protection in place (which we will get to after your PC is cleaned up), you should only need what we recommend and it is all free.

Do you need anything on the old drive? If so, copy what you need off the old drive and then format the drive so that it is clean and you can then start using with new WinXP OS.

Read the messages in all the forums. Ask questions in all the forums. That is the best way to learn. No there is no true training/mentoring program established for newbies.

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it
double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Your logs are clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
