nForce sound Driver

Converting an Acer Aspire AST180-UA381B from Vista to XP Pro (32 bit). Changed chipset driver, now graphics and ethernet are working fine, but I can't seem to get the right audio driver. PC Wizard 2010 is listing the audio device as Elitegroup Computer Sys nForce 430 (MCP61) HD Audio

I have tried two different drivers that were supposed to be correct, yet I still have no sound . I suppose I could continue to download drivers from shadier and shadier sites until i get wormed, or I could ask the ever-knowledgeable folks here at MG for advice (yes i searched the "similar threads" shown before posting this).

The Acer is running like a champ now that I got the notoriously laggy, resource hog Vista off - all that is left is getting the sound working and I'll be a happy boy. Ok, well, a happy 41 year old.

    :p

Try the Microsoft UAA patch located here or here.

If that doesn't work, try the MS audio fix-its.

And, if those don't work, let us know, and we'll start doing some real digging.

Oh, yeah - what does the Device Manager tell you about the audio device? Any flags?

Yeah, audio device, and all subsets are not only flagged with the exclamation point in a triangle, but notated with a question mark as well, even though PC Wizard is identifying the device as shown in my first post. I'll fire that machine up in a bit and give your links a shot. I'll let you know what happens.
    Thanks a ton.

Oops I need to clarify. Device manager shows the question marks on "other devices", when expanded, shows the audio device flagged and with a '?' as well as the following : lexmark printer (X5400 series) , PCI Modem, SMbus Controller, and a second entry "X5400" - which is the printer model .
Now that I am on the computer in question, i see that Sound, video and game controllers all appear ok .

No luck. Updated to WMP 11, hoping perhaps windows update would recognize the missing driver and fix it (yeah, right) . Still have no sound.:(

Naturally, this is going to be a tough one.

I did find this: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/desktop/aspire_t180.html , which has an 'audio.zip' listed under Win XP. Looks legit, might try it if you haven't already.

Of course, if this turns out to be fruitless, you can always pop in a cheap PCI sound card. ;)

Here's a strange result. Through your link, I installed a realtek driver, my toolbar popped up a "Found New Device" notice. At the same time, I got a full size popup "Found New Hardware - Cannot Install this hardware MEDIA (shows a little speaker icon) an error occurred during installation of the device Access is Denied- click finish to close Wizard". But the driver installer itself is showing the installation is complete and to restart my computer to finish the installation.
All of this happened at once, and I wanted to relay this information while it is still on my screen, before the restart so I don't forget it.
Restarting now, lets see what happens.

And he said "LET THERE BE SOUND" and there was sound. And it was good.
Quite the bizarre install, things telling me it failed, things telling me it worked.
I guess the most important thing is that it is now working, however the computer did freeze up when i restarted. Thanks Cal !
I'll restart again, and hopefully no freeze this time.

    Good job!

If you're still crashing, you might try running CCleaner (both the files and registry cleaners) and Driver Sweeper, get rid of some of the failed install stuff.

Things worked out fine, credit goes to you.
    Another win for MG.
