    Hi All...

So, I had been using my Audigy Gamer card instead of the onboard sound because I've just always used a card and not paid much attention to any on board system. When I started getting noise from the card (and couldn't find the source) I decided to switch over to the Nvidia sound and see if it was all I've read about. Well, it was unremarkable at first. The eq settings would not save, so browsing and regular sounds were totally flat. And I was still getting some static, altho much better than with the card. So, read in an Nvidia board about Realtek drivers and thought I'd give them a try. Crash on install. Machine booted back up and I tried to de-install the Nvidia sound drivers... crash.. crash... safe mode, back up my stuff, still not able to de-install the drivers... crash crash crash.

I'm reformatting the system I just built the other day because of this damned static problem. This is ridiculous.

Has anyone had an audio problem like this and solved it by purchasing an external sound card?

    Thanks.

Aye, thanks.. .downloaded them earlier this morning. But I've found that turning the dx hardware acceleration down on the sound seems to help my static problem wtih the Audigy. I might go back to the onboard sound, however, so I can fabricate an even spiffier intake fan.

Well, I get pretty good sound out of this one w/ my Monsoon speakers... but I'm starting to lean toward Creative "sucking" as well. A friend recommended the Philips Acoustic Edge... think I'll give it a shot.

I have a Philips AcousticEdge ... sounds good, only bad thing I can think of is the fact you need the S/PDIF out thing or it won't output any sound at all,...

Yeah it's pretty sad when I reccommend AC '97 over a dedicated device. They need to get out of rebranding CD drives, modems, and 50-piece steak knife sets and back into creating good hardware and software. Then again, they haven't had consistent drivers and hardware hooks since the original 8-bit SoundBlaster.

Of course, back then drivers were mostly written 3rd-party. :)

Anyways, you might want to look into the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. On newegg it has 5 stars and 160 votes and runs $40.

From what I've read, the Philips card is really fantastic for gaming, but doesn't have the separation for music .... This Audigy card is sounding really fine now that I've gotten the bugs worked out. I think I'll sit on it a while and see if it gives me any more headaches.

Yeah, I had a Creative SB Live! Mp3+ card about 4 years ago that is still, to this day, the best sounding pc card I've heard. But then again, I haven't heard any of the ridiculously expensive ones... and I DON'T WANNA! I'm sure one listen and I'll be itching to get one and I have a great stereo system in the other room. :)

Thanks for the info... truly appreciated.

If i was a rich man, id go for a yamaha sound card, because they are fan-bloody-tastic, specially for music stuff (which is the main thing i use my computer for!) since it has XG, which i have on my keyboard and is rather cool :)

thats just my opinion tho :)

Oh yeah, then you get the sound cards(well, more like sound blocks!) that come with Pro Tools, which are basiically the size of standard rack units, and you can add inputs 16 at a time by adding a 1U expansion block onto it, and the same with outputs, inserts and whatever, including support for Dolby 5.1 encoding/decoding in real time, and mastering setups :). EDIT: oh yeah, and they go up to 32-Bit, but as you know most people still use 16-bit as its the same as used for CDs

I'm pretty certain I've got a complete screenshot set of the entire Philips AcousticEdge Digital 5.1 as it's been renamed to :D

you can choose to optimize it for games or for music, change the fade outs, echoes, anything ... pretty cool card, too bad it's replaced by a Terratec and has to do service in a poorly maintained P3 computer :D
