    Is this a question about the file system utility (Fsutil) in the Vista command line?

    Set the option 'disable8dot3' to 0 (=false)

    Sorry..Should have given more info..
    I am installing a codecs app and it stopped on install saying the short name generation nfst needs to be enabled...before the vfw componants can be installed

    You still didn't state the OS

    In XP open the registry editor and navigate to

    HKLM\system\controlset001\control\filesystem

    and check the status of the key

    ntfsdisable8dot3namecreation

    If it is set to 1 that is your problem, many programs will not install unless it is set to zero.

    Changing it may affect other installed programs however.
