hi, i am presently handling a rather nasty bout with a virus. It made my start/task bar/system tray move down so i couldn't see it at all (it was not just auto-hide) i was able to make it viewable after going into safe mode and messing around. i still cant see programs in the task bar, but that is a different topic. Among the many problems, it seems that my computer not longer recognizes speakers/headset/microphone when it is plugged in. I have tried many things and cant get a fix. I want to reinstall the drivers but my windows installer was damaged by means of the virus and when i try to repair it by extracting a new windows installer into the old, i get an error (Error 1719 if you want to see specifics on Microsoft support). all of their fixes don't work. i have a DELL dimension 8300. (i would give you a lot of info on the motherboard and other stuff but my copy, paste, drag, and drop commands don't work (another annoying symptom). Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2. In device manager, when i try to view properties it doesn't show up (another symptom i suspect). there is no yellow question mark or what ever next to the sound, video and game controllers option. now a list of the stuff under the sound, video, gamer controllers thing: Audio Codecs, Creative SB Live! Series (WDM), Game Port for SB Live! Series, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device, and Video Codecs. any and all help will be appreciated.

You should rid your computer of all viruses/malware first and then deal with the problems that remain.

Hi Swim, Welcome to Major Geeks. Seems you have been having some fun, but know your way round a pc somewhat.

If you have tried to restore files I presume you have the Dell Operating system Restore disk? Have you not also got the Dell drivers disk?

If not you can sownload the drivers from
    www.dell.com

However I agree with DJ that audio is not your most pressing problem, unless you can sort the malware (or have you done that?) and the operating system you will have to reinstall Windows, followed by the drivers anyway. So there is no point doing the sound at this stage.

Have you been using msconfig to control startup and have you suppressed the virus and perhaps the sound here? Your aim should be to return msconfig to normal startup eventually.

I suggest you try to improve the OS by recovering the protected system files.
    Windows key + R >typein cmd
In the black box which opens typein at the > prompt
    sfc /scannow (note double n)
Have your Dell OS disk handy it will probably ask for it.

Tell us how you get on
