I do alot of music recording and this is killing my weekend off work! This is just a store bought PC i added some RAM and a cheapy video card. It's an onboard sound device, i've never upgraded that portion on the PC.

First you may want to make sure the volume is not muted out.

Next go to device manager and make sure the driver is ok(use this devise is on).

Next try to reload the device driver.

    Hope this helps. Bye

This same thing actually happened to me! I understand your frustration because it took me a while to figure out how and why my sound wasn't working.

It sounds to me like you inadvertenly deleted your audio driver (don't ask how i still don't know how i did it but i did it!)

My first advice go to your manufacturer's website i.e. dell, hp, gateway and download the audio driver from the website.

If you don't have internet access (like i did), the cd's that came with the computer (one is the operating system and the other is the drivers) load the drivers disk and it will re-install all the drivers that initially came with your pc.
It fixed my problem, hope it helps you!!

I finally got my sound back! I don't know how I did it but I guess it was just hit and miss.
I downloaded Realtek AC97 and it actually worked. I don't remember what site I got it from since I visited dozens over several days.
I want to take this opportunity to thank those who responded to my problem. This is a great forum and I have it bookmarked for future reference. Thanks again.

TIGGER125, you're lucky. There are several Realtek AC97 driver packages out there. They're "paired" to the motherboard, which varies in different systems.
