No Audio Output Device is Installed

Running Vista Home Premium SP2. Device Manager will not open as it gives me and mmc.exe application error so I am not able to see anything there. I tried and SFC scan but that did not help. Any ideas for a fix on this?

as you have run SFC and it found nothing from what you mentioned I would be tempted to run the below and post in the malware removal forum on majorgeeks if anything is found in the scans

Can you boot into Safe Mode and open Device Manager? if not the above is apt to run.

To clear up my confusing statement about the sfc scan. When I ran the scan it said there were corrupt files but they couldn't be repaired. I am not near the computer now but when I boot in safe mode it says something akin to no audio services available instead of not installed. I will check and see if I can pull up device manager in safe mode when I get home.

and try to locate, using the path shown in the article the log to see what can't be repaired with sfc.

Someone solved the mmc problem by replacing the mmc file on the problem computer with one from a working computer running Vista.

And as David pointed out, it could be caused by malware.
