Have you noticed that in this day and age people have little to any fortitude to stand up and stand behind what they say? Like the internet for example. Gives people anonymity unlike anything else in the past, and I notice that be it message boards, email, whatever, people say the most horrible stuff ever, but if they were in your face, you know they wouldn't think about it.

On the other side of this, what about face to face relations? We tippy toe around each other and do not tell the truth as often as we should. Now I'm not talking about being a big ole jackass or anything. Decorum i agree is essential, but for instance people have a hard time telling people to stop doing something that is annoying, improper, etc, but just go on enduring it and just griping behind that person's back, and never confronting them. I on the other hand confront people and their ill-behavior and when I do, it's somehow looked down upon.

So do you think that as a culture, we are going, to put it semi-crassly "no balls at all" or what?

I think the "no balls" ideology has mutated from the litigious society we live in.

People sue for the most ridicules things now, one comes immediately to mind, A guy sue McDonald's i think it was because his coffee was too hot and they did not warn him.

When i was about 13 or 14 the local police Sgt caught me smoking and gave me a slap up the back of the head (it was better than taking me home to my dad) can you imagine the outcry of abuse if he did the same thing now.

The whole world has gone mad.

    Wow. Totally wise words.

You must be the smartest man in Belgium, if not, at least at this western end of the spiral galaxy.

I agree, this was put best in a movie with Hilk Hogan many years ago.
    Suburban Commando:

Hulk moves gang leaders car and damages it.

It was around this time I realised problems would no longer be sorted out "Man to man".

Now almost everybody hides behind someone else.

    Why is this?

Well I think some of it is to do with the fact that our lives have been made too easy, I mean look at us, we can do almost everything we need to do from the comfort of our own homes, we can order pizza, get shopping, pay the bills, chat to friends, learn, threaten, fight..... the list is endless, and when we do have to leave our homes we plug our gadgets into our cars and do all of the above while driving, then we get to work and still manage to do all of the above while sitting at a desk.
Kids don't go to friends houses to see if they want to come out and play anymore, everything is designed to make life lazier and with laziness comes the ease of blaming someone else, not taking responsibility and hiding behind pieces of paper or electronic screens.

    Welcome to the 21st century.

I have been standing up and telling some home truths all week in work, and have also PM'd a member or two on here to request that they email me to discuss their posting habits as they have no netiquette, but no reply so far. The work thing is well in the hands of my bosses who are consultant surgeons and have ultimate power in the health service I work for, so it will be sorted, I will get a backlash from those involved but well and I will be honest I hate with a passion lazy administration (paperwork over computing).

If I have major issue with someone thats gone beyond just a gripe on the forum, then you will get a PM from me.

That was the way of the world in Britain at one time. If we were little ratbags at school, we got a smack or the strap at school. Then another slap from our parents when they found out. Same with polis or any figure of authority.
Then Nanny State reared her ugly head and outlawed any and all means of chastisement, even parents towards their own kids. And that, dearly beloved is why feral gangs of lawless kids make it damn nigh impossible to walk our own streets after dark.

Pfft... Screw that. I'll tell ya what I think of you on here, IRL, over the phone and if you don't like it you can pucker up and pick a spot. I have more balls than most people, which is astonishing because I have no little hose to offset the look. A chick with massive emotional balls is just all lopsided and weird looking.

Thank you for saving me some typing! If you meet me in person, this is still what you get. Life's too short.

Amen. I don't believe in an internet persona. If you don't like who I really am, eff off and die. :p Yeah, IRL sometimes I wait 5 whole minutes before I tell you all about yourself, but I still will. Oh.. and uh.. I flirt a lot less. But usually in social situation IRL it's not the time or place for that, and there wives/gfs are right there... so... it's just bad form. :p

Honesty is no longer the best policy. Honesty now leaves you tied up in litigation for the remainder of your life for slander.

People expect you to lie through your teeth, and are horrified when you don't.

Same here . . . I don't act online any differently then I do in person. Well, I might log on in my underwear now and then . . . I don't go out in public that way. Normally.

Well, I'm basically the same I.R.L. as on the 'net. Most people like the way I am, maybe a few don't like me for their own assine reasons. Then again, I don't like them, either.;) I try not to be rude or obtuse, then I don't have any apologizing to do - simple, really.

I'm not a nice person in RL. I've burned tons of bridges in my life, and I'm okay with it. The people weren't worth the drama they brought with em. I expect to be treated as I treat people, little respect and honesty goes along way with me, but both are in short supply these days. Spend lots of time trying to stay out of jail because of it too.

Online I'm respectful and try to be fair, but when drama gets started I just leave it alone. No point arguing with somebody online cause they can do or say whatever they want. Defeats the purpose.

In the U.S. it's ridiculous what people can get away with. Stand up for yourself in most areas and you're guaranteed a trip to jail and a record (I don't mean be violent either). Want a decent job or to keep your rights you've gotta learn to take trash from everybody. That's why I just avoid most social gatherings and large groups of people. Lose my temper because some punk has no fear and knows the law's on his side and there goes my job, my rights, and any hope of ever having a good job or getting the rights back.

It seems more like the trash that should be afraid to speak aren't, and decent folks have no backbone. Good example here in my area is Meth manufacturers, users, and dealers. Say and do whatever they like and mostly get away with it. Smack one for keying your car or stealing from you though, and you get screwed. Only option is to call the law, which won't arrive in time, then explain what happened and know it won't matter and that you wasted hours of your day. Makes my stomach turn.
