no beeps - no connection

Which piece of hardware would you point me at when I get the message on the monitor "no connection" and when there are no beeps. I've checked that all the cables are tight. I replaced the chip fan yesterday and tried to get the fins out so I could replace them as well, but never figured out how to get it out. I finally gave up and just put in a new fan and started the computer. It worked fine. Now it's the next day and I get "no connection" and no beeps.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Hey tunered!
The computer turns on, and on the monitor I get VGA and a few seconds later "no connection". When we hooked the comp up to another monitor, we got the same response. The PSU and fans are working. The keyboard (ps/2) is not working (the LEDs on the keyboard don't light up). The cable mouse's optical red light (usb) lights up whether the computer is on or not (where is that power coming from?). The cd and dvd drawers open and close while the computer is on if I push their open/close buttons. I do not hear anything to make me think the computer is in the boot-up sequence. The harddrive never revs up or tests the cd player, which I think it used to do. I can't tell if it is running or not, but if it is, it doesn't seem to be doing anything. The A-drive remains mournfully silent.
    Does this help?

Oh, one other thing. The fan attached to the mother board is getting power.

Sorry Abri i looked over this post, I have a feeling that the cpu is not seated, pull the heatsink back off and remove the cpu and reseat it, hold finger pressure on the cpu as you fold the arm down. Let me know what takes place. ed

    Hi tunered!
We tried beating the cpu like you said .... but it didn't help! LOL
No ... sorry ... that was a typo. We tried Seating the cpu and that didn't help, however, I went over the motherboard with a magnifying glass and there are 6 wires, I think, that come from the on switch to the mother board. 3 pairs. red/white, blue/black and green/white. The green/white cable is not plugged in. These seem to plug into the jumpers. (?) ... Is it possible the green/white plug needs to be plugged in? I'm afraid that it's probably not this simple, but I wanted to ask.

(oh, just want to add a note here ... I'm making progress. This time, when I held the chip down, after 5 seconds the machine turned off. Then I tried it again and it stayed on for 2-3 seconds, shut off and everything smelled like electrical burning.)

    continuation of the sage ...

The chip seems to burn up if we push down on it (it smells like electrical fire and the computer shuts down immediately). If we don't push down on it, it powers away with the fans blowing, but gives two brief messages on the screen - VGA and after a few seconds "no signal". Also, I can't hear anything like boot up going on, so I think the power is making it to somewhere before the chip - is that possible? These are the things that work now:

The keyboard - which didn't before
    the on/off switch
    the CPU fan
    the PSU
    the graphics card fan
the drawers for DVD and CD

Don't know if the graphics card works, but the monitor gives the above messages.
Don't know if the chip works
Don't know if all of the mother board works, but obviously those parts work that are required to run the fans.

It has the feel to it of a faulty wire somewhere. I've checked all the plugs and jiggled the wires in the PSU in case there might be a loose wire in there.

Thanks for any suggestions ... hate to throw it away if it's just a loose wire somewhere. Is there any trouble the new fan could make? I can't imagine it.
