running Win7 64 bit on a Dell machine...

Downloaded all recommended programs (Rouge, TDSS, Malwarebytes, MG Tools, etc)

Ran scans and got hits, one program told me it needed to reboot. Did I make an error not rebooting after each app scan?

Now, I have a mouse cursor like I normally do, but no desktop. If I shut the computer off then turn it back on I get the usual dell screen with the f2 (bios setup) and f12 (boot options). Then the screen goes blank, flashes screen that says "Resuming Windows" and I am back to a blank screen with my mouse cursor.

I can't get a clean reboot or a full shutdown. No reaction when I use ctrl alt del, windows key or any f key.

<edit> Seems like it is hung in the midst of that apps doing their thing. I can't get machine to boot by cd either

Do I need to remove the cmos battery to get a clean boot?

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan. There will be two options to choose from. One if you do not have your Windows 7 boot DVD and another when you have your DVD.

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Option1: Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.
Option2: Enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
    • Insert the installation disc.
    • Restart your computer.
    • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

Dell has two F key options upon startup...F2 for Bios, and F12 for Boot Options. I've tried F8 and F12 while the system is booting and it gives me the "Resuming Windows" for a few seconds before the screen transitions and eventually goes back to a blank screen with my cursor. The bios recognizes my flash drive as a primary boot device, and the FRST64 file is on it. I have two recovery / backup discs that Dell's setup system had me make when I first setup the computer. I tried setting the bios to boot to the optical, but it would do the same thing. F8 doesn't stop the boot from going to "Resuming Windows", Neither does F12, and neither does the boot to the flash drive.

    ok, now something different...

Flash in usb turn it on...press F8 repeatedly and I get one line in the upper left corner that says "Missing Operating System" with a flashing cursor after it.

No matter what I did, I could not get F12 to actually go to the boot options screen.

After going back and forth in the bios between using the cdrom and the usb port as the priority boot, There was a brief glimpse of the "Starting Windows" screen" during one of the attempts to boot it up. Then it proceeded to go black again as before.

Tried it one more time with the cd, then I saw the familiar "loading windows" files. That at least got me to the point where I could use the recovery disc..

odd thing happened once it was attempting to use the recovery partition to restore windows. It hung on 1% once it started to attempt to restore the operating system files. Then I put the backup cd in the drive and that must have jiggled something because it finally started showing some activity.

I have to start from scratch, but at least I am operational now. Not sure why the FRST program didn't get it to boot.

Thanks for all your help. hopefully the feedback will be useful in the future.
