I just built up a new system for my daughter using a Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G motherboard and Pentium D 3.0 Chip. This board has 3 IDE channels. I'm using the 1st IDE channel for 2 hard drives and that is working fine. I have the CD ROM connected to the 2nd IDE Channel and I cannot see it at all. I have tried just about every setting in the Bios that I can and don't see a thing. I've never had this happen but I usually use Intel boards. If anyone has ever seen this with a Gigabyte board or has any suggestions please let me know.
Thanks...oh and i've used the 3rd channel as well and a different IDE cable just in case. No change.

Check the jumper settings on the optical rom drive, is it set to master?

Oh ya i've done that. I've even tried it on all settings and without the jumper. Also have tried a different IDE cable.

Does it display up in Disk Management? Go to Control Panel > Admin. Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management.

Nope. I had done that also. I had tried rescanning the discs all of that stuff. I moved cables all over the place, changed bios to every setting I knew I could change and so on. I was hoping that someone had seen this kind of thing before.

Are you using an 80-conductor IDE cable-- with blue, gray and black connectors? Is the blue connected to the mobo, and the CD drive-- jumpered Master or Cable Select-- attached to the black connector at the other end of the cable?

    That's how it's set up.

Does this apply to your setup?

I have to look again but I believe that the motherboard came with a 3.5" front USB and sound deal so you can connect from the front of the box. I'll double check though and make sure it came with it. I'm pretty sure it did. I read on Gigabyte that they are recommending you connect all optical drives to IDE 1 and HDD to IDE2. I've never heard of that before.

From what I read, your IDE 2 & 3 are capable of higher transfer rates than is IDE 1.

Yah i read that today also. I really really don't want to rebuild that system. I may try this weekend to just move stuff around and see how it works but if worse comes to worse i'll just use a USB CD ROM and call it a day. It's my daughters PC so she needs it for school. I don't want to have it down again for a whole day.

Of course, there is that old base-level troubleshooting that says check the drive to see if it works in another machine, or a known-working one in this machine.

And then there's the story about an old very-computer-savvy friend of mine who, at his wits' end, offered me money to come troubleshoot a drive. He had everything pulled away from the wall and opened up when I arrived. I said it must be that drive there, no? He asked how could I tell without even first sitting down at the keyboard. I said because it's the only drive in the case without a power cable connected to it. True story.

    That's funny. :D
Yah i've checked the drive in 2 other machines as it were. It was working in the old computer before I started the upgrade to a new PC. So i'm sure it's probably the config with IDE's. I'll mess with it Saturday or Sunday.
