My co-worker lives out in the country and the only internet option available to her is dial up. Although other telephonic devices work in her house, her modem can not detect a dial tone. Her computer works fine in my house (in the city) and connects to the internet just fine, with the exact same network connection. Any ideas on what may be going on?

plug a known working phone into the plug that plugs into her modem.
in other words unplug the phone line from her modem and plug it into a phone that you know works.
there must be a break in the line that goes from her modem to the rest of the lines in the house.
the solution is to replace the line.

We have tried that. I am at my wits end! We have had IP tech support and the phone company working with us, and we still cant get it resolved. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Is it a typical internal modem, with two jacks? One marked for the wall jack, and the other for a telephone set. Some modems have a "feature" that cuts off the telephone one, so someone inadvertently picking up the phone doesn't bork an active connection. Maybe she just has them reversed.

I have not thought of this, but the modem works fine at my house with the same settings.
