:confusedI have a Dell Dim. 3000 running xp. I recently found out that both my DVD and cd rom do not work. I looked at the device manager and there were exclamation points on both dvd and cd rom drives. Plus I found the following error message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I have the same message for both drives. Is there anything I can do? Thanks for your help.

The first thing would be to go back to the Device Manager, right click on each drive, and select Uninstall from the menu that appears. Then restart the PC. If that doesn't work, click on this direct link to download a 'fix' file. Unzip it, and double click the resulting .REG file to merge it into the registry. Restart the PC. If that doesn't work, download your chipset driver from this link but DO NOT install it right away. Uninstall the CD drives from the Device Manager first as I described earlier, then install the chipset drivers and restart the PC even if you're not prompted to. If that doesn't work, let us know and we'll try some other stuff....
    Good luck! :-D

I did the first part of your directions, went to device manager and uninstalled both drives and restarted pc. That did nothing. I clicked on your direct link and that gave me file not found. Do you want me to continue with the rest of your solution?

    You can also try this
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
    for XP and Vista.
Error code 39 is listed towards the bottom of the article.
You can either click the fixit button and have it done automatically or scroll down to the XP section and do it manually, which is what has been posted here for several years by Adrynalyne.

Thanks for your help in fixing this problem. Your directions have solved my problem. I guess I didn't research far enough into this to fix it myself. Again thanks for the help.:)
