It helps if you mention what version of windows you are running.
Brand and model of computer will help too so we can look up your hardware and see exactly what optical drive is installed.

    Hey man,

    Thanks for your response.

So basically I think this is the information you need.

    Microsoft Windows vista Home premium

    version, 6.0.6002 service pact 2 build 6002

    system type x86-based pc

    BIOS version/date Hewlett-packard F.07, 09/08/2007

Also, I've read up about restoring it to a time when everything ran smoothly. However, As I'm such a retard I've never actually backed my computer up.

    Thanks!rolleyes

I have almost the same issue, but with an added twist! My CD/DVD drive won't read a CD OR DVD, but I have absolutely no trouble BURNING a CD or DVD. When I try to play a CD or DVD, the drive will "try" to read it, then my computer suddenly doesn't recognize the hardware and the drive letter (D: in this case) disappears. I may be mistaken, but I think it could be a driver issue, since I can burn discs just fine (I use BurnAware free BTW).

My system info is as follows (I recently had a new hard drive installed & included information on that, too)

    Compaq Presario V5000 laptop
    Windows XP Professional Version 5.1.2600
    Service Pack 3
    DirectX 4.09.00.0904

    DISK DRIVES:
    Hard drive:
    Hitachi HTS722012K95A00

    CD/DVD drive:
    HL-DT-ST DVD RAM GSA-4084N

ANY help at all you can give would be greatly appreciated! This is really starting to get on my nerves.

One more question: is there such a thing as an EXTERNAL CD/DVD drive that hooks up to a computer via a USB or other port?

    MamaBear1968 please don't hijack lee.pob's thread.
You need to start a new thread for your problem.

lee.pob I need the model of HP not the BIOS version. We don't know if you are using a desktop or a laptop.

Easiest thing to do but it entails spending $$, buy an external DVD burner. This is way easier than replacing the burner on a laptop.
I bought an LiteOn about a year ago. I tested to be sure all the computers in the house (currently 7) recognized it so I could listen, watch or burn CDs and DVDs on my desktops, laptops and netbooks.

    example of a portable burner:

Look around and read reviews before you decide on a particular model.
