Hi folks i am need of some input :confused
I have been having overheating problems with one of my PCs and found today that one of the fans had seized so while i had it apart i decided to change my GPUs round and put the GTX295 with the faster processor.
I removed the GTX260 from the PC and put it in the slower of the 2 and all was OK it runs like a dream.
But the other just will not give me any visual.
I have checked all the connections to mobo, hdds and so on, removed the GPU and reseated it but all to no effect.
The fans start up and the GPU fans are running plus the light on the back of the gpu is lit.
Having tried all i know (very little) i brought out another GPU a GTX250 that has sat in the workshop and never been used (brand new) but i get the same results with that card.
I am using Windows 7 ultra with an Antec 650watt PSU, a Q6700 CPU and an Asrock P45R2000 mobo.
    So any suggestions please.

So, if I understand this correctly: you removed a GTX260 that was working (overheating, but working) and replaced it with a GTX295 first; when that gave no video, you swapped it out for a brand new GTS250, and again got no video. Did I get this right? Have you tried putting in the 260 again just to see what happens? I have a feeling that something else may have been 'knocked' loose while moving the monster-sized video cards around. It's easy to do with video cards of this size. I have a similar setup (Antec EA650 PSU, GTX260) and installing the card was tricky due to its size, and I have a good sized case. Anyway- try clearing the CMOS, double check EVERYTHING on the mobo (RAM, other PCI cards, CD/DVD data and power connections, CPU cooler, floppy drive data and power connection, etc). If a power connection is halfway on (or halfway off) it can cause strange things to happen. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to tell you. :confused
    GOOD LUCK BILL!!!!

BTW- "Having tried all i know (very little)" LOL You're not giving yourself enough credit! You are one of the more knowledgeable members here at MG! (IMHO) :highfive

Thanks for the reply, You were close.
the GTX 260 was coupled with the faster CPU (Q6700) so i put it in the other PC (Q6600) and it runs perfectly.

The GTX295 was the one that was overheating (fan seized and temps peaked 106C) but this would not give video so i replaced it with the new GTX250 and still no video.
I have not reset the CMOS so i will do that and let you know how it goes.
Both PC are full tower so i have plenty of room.

    what make is you mobo?
if it's asus it might be a bios issue, at least it was in my last machine it's mobo was p5ne-sli and it had a nforce 650i chip but it had and issue with geforce cards until a bios update was released that fixed the issue.

The mobo is Asrock P45R2000 but this should not be the problem as it was running perfectly with thr GTX295 ,I took the battery out of CMOS for 30 min and re-assembled it checking all the wireing but still no output.
The pc is running because i have the keyboard lights just no screen.
The screen is OK because i have my other PC plugged into it now.

I went to asrock's web site and searched under your mobo's model number and there's a 1.8 bios update you could download and install if you don't have it yet, who knows it might fix the issue your having.http://www.asrock.com/MB/download.asp?Model=P45R2000

    @hugh750
I can download the bios update with this PC and load it to a flash drive but i have no way to get it into the other PC without visual and the card does not have onboard video so removing the GPU will not work either.

    You hit it.
I have put it in the other slot and get a screen but i can not get it to boot.
I can get into bios but it will not boot from CD/DVD and just goes around in circles.
I have reset CMOS but nothing
I suspect that the MOBO is damaged but i am not sure ????

I have stripped the PC right down and re-built it but it will not boot past the repair screen.

Hi Digital thanks for coming back.
Yes i can navigate within the bios.
I removed the battery for CMOS and left it out for 30 min as for the jumpers i am not sure how re-set those.

All fans are good and all light are on.
I will try swapping ram sticks.
As far as i know the hard drives are OK, when i fire the PC up it tries to start and gets as far as the windows7 logo then it starts the automatic repair but ends up saying it can not repair it and send report to MS.
I am not sure what SMART is so i ca not give you details.

I do not know if it makes a difference but the GPU is not in the original slot because when i had it there it would not give a screen.

I have tried to get it to boot from CD/DVD (via BIOs)to go the route of re-format but it just goes straight back to searching for the OS and will not boot from Disk.

    Well nothing seems to work.
I Checked and CMOS was clear.
I disconnected both HDDs and put setup disk in the loader then fired it up and just for a moment i thought it would load so i hot pluged the Sata to the HDD in and it went into re-format i selected language and keyboard it then went on to load the files but at that point it stopped everything (waited 20min)
so i hit restart it now tells me Boot loader is missing so it looks as though this is terminal.

. That's because you hot plugged the drive while things were in motion, you have to have the drive connected and the do a new install with a quick format. You might be able to still repair the bootloader so try that first.

The problem is Augie that with the HDD connected i can not load from CD/DVD it will always go to the HDD as first load and i can not change it in Bios thats why i tried with it unplugged.

I can also load Hirens but for some reason the keyboard is not active when i get the boot screen and i don't have another one to try.

    Bill:cry

edit I also have 2 live CDs Linux and XP but the keyboard remains dead on those as well.
I can only think somthing has gone wrong in the bios but i have not been changing them so i am at a loss.

Ah, sorry as I thought you were finally able to get into the BIOS. I need more coffee.:)

I can get into the Bios and it will let change the boot sequence but for some reason it will not let me use CD/DVD as first boot, i can set it 2nd 3rd 4th but not first.

You know from past experience Augie that i don't give you simple problems :-D
As usual i will keep on trying to get this beast to behave but at the moment i have no idea where i am going.
I can not get out for a few days so i have time to play(i can't make it worse.)
    Thanks for the input.

Well, about the only other thing I can say is try different SATA mobo slots/cables as I had a problem with my last build where the supplied cables were not positively connected, one just had to blow on the cable to have it disconnect. I remember at one point I had to hold the cable plug pushed into the hard drive to get it to boot after which it was OK until the next boot.:eek Had to buy some WD SecureConnects to alleviate the issue. Oh that wasn't a problem until 6 mths. in either.

I'm not saying that's what the issue is but it's a feeble grasp at straws for me at this point. Took me quite a while to figure it out too, maybe it'll help and maybe not. Worth a try to switch mobo plugs at least.

After another long and exhausting day switching drives/cables and all the other bit inside the PC i have finally come to the conclusion that the Mobo is the cause.
I can load from disk as long as i do not have any HDDs connected,I have both sorts of connection (ide and sata) for the HDD and optical drives but if i use the IDE on the HDD the pc will not even start.
I can load both Hirens and Bart pe but the keyboard is not active so i am not able to use them.
So i think i will have to go to my supplier next week and see about replacing the Mobo.
The only problem is when i get in there i am a kid in a candy store and may come home with anything shiny that is on display.

If any one comes up with another idea i have a few days to try it out before i can get out to the store.
Thanks for the input and time from you.
    Bill
