I recently got our 2 home computers connected via a wireless router. Those kids wouldn't stay off of mine! lol Anyway, their computer keeps coming up with this message: There are no high speed usb host controllers on this computer. -- You must add a high speed host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance. Now, I've done some searching until trying to understand this a wee bit-- now I have no hair left :D,so here I am begging for some merciful help from you all.... From what I can tell, this computer does not have USB 2.0 available on it -- only USB. ?? (I am no computer wiz). I am wondering if I can fix this problem by purchasing either a pci usb 2.0 card or firewire/usb 2.0 card to plug into my motherboard, or a hub (looked into an Adaptec XHub 4+). ??? Is this even possible to add USB 2.0 since it is not integrated into my MB? My MB is a Fox Conn, but I cannot find my box to get the model # (I attempted to go to their website for a driver download or ANYTHING that would help me, but without the model # they let you go NOWHERE).

    Sys Info:
    Intel Celeron(R)
    CPU 1.7 GHz
    1.70 GHz
    224 MB RAM
    XP Home Edition v.2002
    SP2

When I go to the Device Manager to look at info. on my USB sit:
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
    USB Root Hub (3 Ports)

Please give me "idiot" answers, as I am NOT a computer wiz. Thanks :confused

ok, you probably have usb 1.1(?) (an older version of usb). i take it you are using usb adapters to connect to your wireless router? if so, then yes a pci usb card should work (or with firewire - but it might cost more). you can't just update your drivers, you have to add a new card, to get the newer version (of course installing those drivers). g/l, sos

ps, is this screenshot (below), what you see?

Yes, that is somewhat similar to the message that I get, and it shows up in the same place as your example did (lower right tray). I quoted word for word in my original post what my error msg says. As far as my USB being 1.1-- how would I know that? See my original post for how my USB's show up in my device mgr. Is there another spot I can look for that info? Through the BIOS settings maybe? Regardless, I do NOT have to use any sort of adapter to plug in my Netgear wireless router. I just plug it right into the regular USB port, and that is why I get the "High speed USB device attached to non high speed hub" message and "router will function at reduced speed. You must add a high speed USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance" message.

What exactly does "g/l sos" mean from your post?

Does a hub end up not being as fast as what a plugged in PCI USB 2.0 card would be?

here is a couple of links, i thought it was only 1.1, and 2.0, but i missed 1.0. basically, a hub is a splitter (like your cable splitter, etc), if you plugged your 2.0 hub into a previous version of usb (most downgrade - will work with older versions of usb), it will still be slower. you are getting the message as you are using usb wireless adapters on your comp(s). you wouldn't need anything for your router. now (fyi), if you had wireless pci adapters, then you wouldn't have to worry about the usb thing. but it's always nicer to be able to move data faster (ie - thumbdrive, and/or external h/d's). - sos

g/l = good luck, my username is "sosaman" - sos for short.
