No Icons or Desktop had alot of spyware.

New to the forum and unfortunately maybe got here a little late. I am working on a friends Hp laptop. When I got it would not boot at all. I used a XP sp-2 disk and did a repair. Will have the OEM disk soon.

1. When it first booted the desktop appeared and there was a warning about VUNDO. I downloaded the Norton removal tool, ran it and it said no virus found?

1a. It now boots but no Icons or task bar.

2. Attempting to launch explorer.exe from task manager results in the momentary appearance of the desk top but then explorer shuts down with no error messages. (wallpaper is shown the whole time).
I can run some other programs also. Not NAV though.

3. This problem exists in both normal and safe mode.

4. I read and followed the advice in this thread. http://forum.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=70002
but it has not helped my problem.

5. I followed the steps 1-6 and was able to run all of the programs but MS spyware... "Installer had an error"
There was a lot of spy/ad ware on the machine. That’s why I posted here

6. I also ran sfc /scannow and not sure if I am supposed to get a report or not since it just closes when it appears to finish.

7. I am unable to go online since the machine has aol and when I try to launch it, it say it needs to install some files and repeated try's fail to install the needed software.

8. I have attached the log file from safe mode.

9. I also tried avast and AVG but no luck.

I forgot to add that I also tried the mscong trick on the other thread with no luck.
