No internet connection after malware !!

Work colleague had virus on laptop. Typical pop up where he was prompted about his pc being infected and he downloaded advertised software - Antivirus 2008 I think !!

Anyway after finally cleaning pc he now cannot connect to the internet at all.
Wireless networks cannot be seen and when you plug an Ethernet cable into the router, you get a LAN connection between the laptop and the router but nothing more - internet explorer cannot display the webpage etc. etc.

Have you tried anything with the computer settings to try and get your connection back?

• Open Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
• Click the Connections tab.
• Click the first entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list, and then click Settings.
• Select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
• Repeat the previous two steps for each entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks list.
• Click the Lan Settings button in the Connections tab, and repeat steps 4-6. Click OK on the Connections tab.
• Close Internet Explorer, and then restart it.
