no internet connection?! what the....

I recently bought a laptop from ebay (cheap me). Once it arrived I ran to my room and placed it on my desk, I turned it on then I grab the ethernet cable from my cable broadband to its etherent port, thinking everything is fine, i get a "acquiring network access" or ip address, it wont let me go online. Now I dont know whats going on, I bought it from ebay from this person, how can I get it to work?, I never had wireless internet before. Thanks

 

You can't go online without an IP address. Try this if your connection is wired:

Try this:
Go to Device Manager (right click my computer -- Properties -- Hardware tab -- device manager button)
Click on the + beside network adapters
Go to the properties of your network card
Go to the advanced tab
ON the right hand side look for something that says "link speed/duplex mode" "media type" etc. etc. Change the value to 10 Half.
See if you get an IP address.

If you're trying to use your internet via wireless, what wireless router or AP do you have? Reset it and see if you can connect.

You can also try to reinstall your network card.

Did your cable connection come with an installation cd that you had to run on your pc before using it? Some connections are setup differently than others, example...pppoe, DHCP, Static.....! Also check to make sure that you are set for DHCP and that the connection is indeed enabled. But I bet you need to run the setup cd for the connection! Let me know what happens. JJ

P.S. Not sure where your going with the wireless internet comment? Can you explain a little more on that please?

 

Well, I think the guy might be using wireless internet because I searched for the problem and it came to using WAN, I dont have WAN I use cable broadband. Also, the installation CD cant connect to my laptop, WTF?

 

WAN = Wide Area Network. When you connect to the internet, you're connecting to a WAN!!! Tell people exactly how the network is setup; what you want to accomplish; what you've done to try to resolve the issue; and the results of each step you've taken. At this point, the only thing we get from reading your posts is that you've bought a laptop with wireless capabilites, and you want to get on the internet. We can't help you if you don't want to help yourself!
