On Saturday morning, I tried to login to my DSL account only to find that I could not. I called my DSL help desk and was able to ping their site and they said there are no issues with my connection. I can't even get through using just plain explorer. And my AIM is not connecting either.

I went and BOUGHT Norton Internet Security, ran a virus scan, etc. I wasn't able to update my definitions at that time, but finally used a friend's internet to copy the files to a CD. I ran the updates and no virus was found.

I ran Ad-Aware (which I conveniently updated just prior to losing my connection) and nothing of importance was found. My Yahoo spyware scan found bonzi buddy, and I removed that.

I downloaded some things from here last night - about:blaster (or something similar, you know...) and another program. Nothing odd was found.

I know before the connection went down I had to do a Microsoft update, which hasn't been done - do you think this is a BROWSER issue? I was thinking it was spyware/virus, but I can't find anything on my system. I did not run a hijak this! file, but can and will post it if you need it.

    Thanks for all your help!

    Allie

try to open up a command prompt, (start, run cmd or command) type in ping www.google.com, if that works its your browser settings, if that doesnt work try to ping 64.233.187.99. If you get a reply from that it is your dns.

Yes, I was able to ping www.yahoo.com. The problem is definitely not in the connection. What is dns?

    Thanks.

dns stands for domain name system, it is used to "translate" a web address to an ip address. For example www.google.com is 64.233.187.99. This is what dns does. But if you can ping www.google.com it is not your dns. It is either your browser or newley installed software.

OK. Gotcha. I was able to ping www.yahoo.com and the IP address for it. Now it has to be my browser, I suppose. Should I re-install IE, my DSL software AND the AIM software?

    Thanks.

from the way things are sounding with aim and ie, it sounds as though you may have a spyware issue that is trying to reroute your traffic also. If that doesnt work i guess you would have to try a different browser, firefox is a good choice.

Try using a dial up connection and see if your browser works with it.

    Set defaults on IE.

Try browsing to the actual IP vice the name. I.E. http:\\64.233.187.99 for google.....
