No Internet on my HP laptop

A few weeks ago, I was stupidly running Torrent software on my laptop (running Windows 7) when I suddenly lost the internet; I would get messages that said the browser couldn't connect to the web page. There were connections available in the cloud, I just couldn't connect to them. I have since uninstalled the Torrent software.

My desktop PC lost its internet at the same time; I'm going to post that under a separate thread; I mention it here just in case it provides more clues. My desktop is linked to the internet throught my parents' ethernet connection, and their PC still connects to the internet. I've got my desktop internet working only by always selecting the last configuration that worked at startup.

I found some similar internet connection threads on here that suggested to check all connections and settings to make sure they are set up properly and they were.

Back to the laptop; I mentioned the problem to the IT person where I work and she offered to look at it. Oddly, the internet worked fine for her when I brought it to work, but she ran something (I think it was Norton), and it worked for her again. So I brought it home and it didn't work.

So did everything in the "Read Me First" thread a couple of days ago and the internet worked fine after that, but it stopped working again last night. (I was downloading some public domain digital comics from a site I have never had malware problems with).

If anyone can help with this, I would really appreciate it! I need my computers to learn and practice new software for my job.

I will post the logs below and in the next post. Thanks very much.
PS: Despite the fact the instructions say you can only upload 4 files, there were 5 upload fields, so I tried all 5; the MG zip failed to upload, so I'll try that separately in the next post. Also, I forgot there were 2 TDSkiller logs (not sure how that happened), so I uploaded the one with the later time code. I can upload the earlier one in the next post.

Here is the other TDSkiller log

The MGlogs.zip won't upload no matter what I try. Any suggestions?

Why not? What error do you receive? Are you sure that you are trying to upload C:\MGlogs.zip or are you trying to upload the MGtools.exe file?

Well based on this, it sounds like your problem is with your setup at home and how you pass through your parents computer to get a connection. You need recheck this. Perhaps a firewall is blocking you. If your PC worked on another network then it is less likely that it is your PC but rather how the connection to/from your PC works.

I still want to see the log from MGtools, but it is not sounding like malware right now.

    Thanks for responding.
    1. Yes, I am sure I am trying to upload the MGlogs.zip file and not the .exe file. I burned all my logs to a CD and am uploading from my parents' computer, so the .exe file isn't even available here. I also tried moving the zip file to the desktop in case the CD was somehow causing the problem.
    2. The only error I see is "File upload failed". Do I need to unzip it?

    3. My laptop logs on to the internet through the cloud. I usually see 2 internet connections available and one of them is publicly accessible with no need for a password (it is called "linksys").
    4. I checked all the connection settings according to instructions on here and everything seemed to check out. I also ran some software I got from here (I'm sorry, I can't recall the name now) which checked the internet connection and it passed.
    5. My parents haven't changed anything or added a firewall since forever, definitely not since these problems started. So unless the firewall is at the cloud connection, I'm not sure that's it.
    6. If it has to do with a firewall or my parents' connection, I'm not sure I understand why would it work briefly after I ran all the software in the "Read and Run Me first" instructions? Wouldn't it continue to not work unless it was malware?

    7. I'm sorry, but I also forgot to mention, the IT person at work had loaned me a cord to try plugging my laptop directly in to my parents' router to see if it would work that way, but it still didn't work . I see now that router's brand name is "linksys". Can routers create their own cloud?

Based on your comments, I took my laptop to the local library to see if I could get online with their cloud and I did.
So then I tried calling my parents internet provider tech support, and they talked me through re-setting a whole lot of internet settings through the command line and through the browser itself, and we got it working again.
Though I still have no understanding as to why it stopped.
Since its pattern has been to work for a little while in some situations, and then stop, I'm still worried that it still may stop working again, so I may be back (though I hope not) :)
    Thanks again for your help!

Glad to hear it because I was very confident that it had nothing to do with malware.

Since you are not having malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

The next time I went back to my laptop, I noticed that the internet connection for "lynksys" is not even listed any more. I didn't think anything of it, but I mentioned it to the IT person at work and she now thinks something is blocking me. Her first thought was a firewall, but I haven't made any changes to Windows firewall. This has me thinking virus again. I Googled to see if there are viruses that block the internet and it looks like there are several. I think I need help to start working on this again.
We left off with me not being able to upload the MG.zip; any advice in getting that to work? Do I need to unzip it?
    Thanks

The best way to check that is to actually shutdown the firewall and run your test.

Doubt it since nothing ever showed and you were able to connect when you did not work thru the other PC. You have a setup issue that you would be better off working in the Networking Forum.

There are many of them but your PC worked fine when not connected thru the other PC. That would not be the case with these infections.

You are apparently not uploading MGlogs.zip because it would work otherwise. Make sure that is what you are trying to upload. Also, what is the size of the file?

Thank you for clarifying that it can't be malware. When the instructions in "Try this first" suggested to wait several days before believing it was fixed, it made me think that a virus might be able to re-assert itself after a period of time, even after it things seemingly work fine. Because that's been the pattern with the laptop.
I'll ask the networking forum what's up. Sorry to be a hassle.

"You are apparently not uploading MGlogs.zip because it would work otherwise. Make sure that is what you are trying to upload. Also, what is the size of the file?[/QUOTE]

I swear, I know what file I'm selecting. It is the MGlogs.zip file. I've been working as a designer on computers since the mid-1980s; I swear I know how to tell one file from another. And I swear, I tried it three times before I even asked you just to be absolutely sure I didn't do something wrong or forget something.
But I'll try to upload it again. Yep, it says "Upload of file failed".
It's 2.64 megabytes. Was there a size limit listed somewhere I overlooked?

Yes there is an upload limit ( 2097152 bytes for ZIP files ) and it more than likely stated this in the manage attachments window when you try to upload it. And it would be extremely unusal for an MGlogs.zip file to be 2.64 MB. More typical is 10 times less than that. So I'm not sure which logs were included in it that would make it that large. You could look inside the ZIP to see which files are very large. The sysinfo.txt log on Vista and Win 7 PCs is typically the largest but it normally compresses to a small size.
