I see. (Ok, I may have just lied!). The choices of: a different computer, or a good ol Briggs and Stratton engine just got easier.. or maybe a case of Valiums?? No idea how you folks keep it all straight! I sent a note off to Avast.. maybe they can advise on cleaning off all of their old program stuff.

    CCleaner should do it.

Malwarebytes 2 years ago did not contain all the protection it now does. It has 4 items: Web protection, Exploit protection, Malware protection and Ransomeware Protection. So you can't compare how it worked in the past to the version that came out in mid-2017, v3.
I just had a look and the anti-ransom doesn't work on Vista.

Regarding available AV downloads, and a reply to Eldon who said,
"Microsoft Defender is available for Windows 8 and later.
You might want to consider Microsoft Security Essentials if you want a Microsoft AV."

I thought that might mean that MSE is not MD.. and MSE IS listed as functional with Vista.. but it's NOT!

I wiped the remains of Avast Internet Security, via instructions provided by them. With AVG and MB running, it has continued to hang several times. So I removed AVG per Avast instructions.. and started looking over the list of possible AV options here. Eldon had mentioned MSE (in post 10).. and after a half hour of loading that from the list here, and waiting for all of the library to load.. THEN.. it tells me it doesn't work with Vista.

It might be good to remove "Vista" from the list of applicable OS for which it might work. I wouldn't expect Microsoft to check my system BEFORE it loaded all of that.

So my question.. do I proceed with a full uninstall.. since it is showing as a real program (which simply isn't functional)?

If anyone knows of a AV that will (hopefully) work with Vista Business, and Malwarebytes premium.. please let me know. Santa's sleigh will be empty if it means I'm out shopping for a new (old) computer that will run Windows 7.

    Thanks for any help, Jerry

Looking grim.. LOL. With only Firefox and MalwareBytes Premium running, the computer just hung up again. I may have to fire up the Yugo and head down to GoodWill, to see if I can find a new power supply for the Commodore, or maybe my Vector Graphics System B would be more viable??

    Hey..
No worries.. it's just that most of the freebie stuff won't load/run. And not knowing what WILL work, I tend not to buy into the non-free ones at this time. With only MWB running, and it hangs.. it doesn't appear to be a Antivirus/AntiMalware conflict. I just reloaded AVG.. and will soon run some scans on the one computer I have here, which should run Win 7.

Thanks for the reply! Happy Holidays! Jerry
