I have been working on the network board trying to figure this one out. I have posted a recent post that I made below. First some background, I have a Sony Vaio with Windows XP and the Realtek RTL 8139 NIC card and I have lost my IP address. I can go through the same modem and connect with my laptop but the PC wont work. If I type IP config in the command prompt I get 0.0.0.0. and Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0. Some of the latest information is also listed below. Any help or guidance anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I am still having the same issues as above with this computer, except I was able to get online once last night and everthing worked correctly, but when I rebooted the system it quit working again and I continue to have the same problems. I also tried a MSN fix for the Cryptogenics problems when trying to download windows updates and it didn't seem to work. I have also noticed that when I go to Device manager and check my Realtek driver it says the device is working properly, but also says the device in not digitally signed. Would installing another NIC card get me around any of these problems? Also, if I tried the System Restore function that is supposed to restore the computer back to factory functions would it fix these problems? I am really ready to get this thing fixed.

    Thanks.

The digitally signed portion is related to Microsoft not checking to see if that particular driver passes their standards. I've installed many drivers with the same issues without any problems.

I believe that WHQL drivers are all digitally signed. But that is a different matter.

Have you tried a program called:

    Winsock XP fix?

Also, you say XP, is this with sp2?

Another thing to check to see if the nic is working is pinging 127.0.0.1

After that try pinging www.majorgeeks.com, if you get a reply, then I believe your DNS is having issues.

When I did the ping 1270.0.1 I got the correct response:

Pinging 127.0.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
    Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128

    Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0m

I have tried the winsock fix but get the same results, I am still running service pack 1 on XP, I have tried installing SP2 but that is when I get the Cryptographics error during install.

    Thanks.

Well I have the same problem too, but since I have the computer hooked up to a lan, all of my computers work so that I can even see the folders on the other computers. I can watch the computer ping the modem, however from the standpoint of the modem, there are no addresses....And this is on a Sony and I'm pretty sure the NIC is built into the mother board. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know, this is driving me crazy. Mel

I just ran ping 127.0.0.1 and I had an error message that said unable to initialize windows socket interface. error code 0
