No land line, just Cell Phone?

I had a cell phone back in the late 1990's, looking at getting one again, and getting rid of my $35 or so a month land line. I found a 'pay per month' unlimited deal, that is around $55. For $10 more a month, I can have the interweb on my cell phone. Unlimited local calling, no long distance. I need to get more info on the exact specs of the deal.

I am finding several times a week where a cell phone would make life easier for me, and well, you never know when you need the interweb...:D So, since I am pretty ignorant as far as the cell phones go, does this sound ok? It is a pay as you go type deal, so beyond the cost of the phone, I can get out of it by just not paying. A friend of mine will sell me one of his phones at a decent price, first month is free?!

Not sure if it has voice mail or not. That would be a deal breaker. Any ideas or suggestions for a cell phone, or good/bad experiences?

Oh, I forgot. I gots really bad credit, and don't want any kind of contractual cell phone stuff. I like a straight up cash and carry/talk kind of situation. I am looking at expanding my compruter repair stuff from word of mouth to a few buisness cards and some signs. I need extra cash, and if it does not work out, heck, I am only out a few bucks.

    Thanks

Don't know how it works in the US, but over here cell phones (or mobile phones as we know them by) are limited in the sense that it's more expensive to call to/from than a landline.

Also, again I don't know if it's UK only, but some things that require registration also require a landline number rather than a mobile number. I know this because a) I've tried lol and b) have a friend who lives on a boat on a canal and he only has a mobile - causes all sorts of problems!

It's definitely something to bare in mind before getting the landline removed....

Yeah, most contracts are traps, there is always a hidden hook, ususally when it comes time to disconnect. Mine is a pay per minute version, 10 cents/minute, which is expensive but with no strings. Actually, that's not quite true, the TMoble version, which is what I have, had hidden charges out the wazzo, usually for intrastate calling (it's cheaper to call out of state). I've been thinking of switching to Net10, if I was sure of their coverage area I'd do it in a heartbeat. I pay $100 for 1 year or a 1000 minutes, whichever expires first. So far I get around 6 months of use.

Unless I am misunderstanding something, this one is a pay as you go type deal also. But it is unlimited local calling and teh interweb for around $70 $75 a month. No contract. You do have to buy the phone. It has no long distance, there may be a way to add that, but I can't remember the last time I made a long distance call.

I will stop by the place and check it out. Thanks for the info.

    $76/month = $912 / year

    2 X $100 = $200 / year

Which one is cheaper depends on how much you use your phone. For me it was a no brainer, since I don't really like to talk anyhow.

The base phone cost me $60 for a flip type, the brick cost $30. If the phone breaks I buy a new one and exchange SIMMs cards.

If your lookin for a pre-paid (pay as you go) this is what I used when I got my very first phone http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/default.aspx?plancategory=4

I used to spend between $50-$100 per month depending on how much I talked that month but with T-mobile you get free long distance within the US.

If you found an "unlimited plan" for $55 thats not bad at all, unlimited means local calling right? well you might want to find out whats "local" because when I lived about 30 minutes away from my sister (in the same city mind you) and I wasnt "local" to her so it used more minutes to talk to her than to talk to someone "local". They always try to get you with that stuff, thats the only thing I like about having the plan that I do.

    Hope it helps :)
