No luck with removal, either

    Hi,
I have completed the Read & Run Me process with no luck. I appear to have the dreaded Google redirect problem. In addition to the solutions suggested in Read & Run, I have tried Norton's Power Eraser, Hitman Pro 3.5 and Spybot Search and Destroy with no effect. I have this problem on all three of my computers -- though I will only deal with this one now and turn to the others after (I hope) the problem gets resolved. Anyway, attached are the various logs. Thanks for the work you are doing.
    Neal

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You forgot to run MGtools and attach the log as requested. However before doing that, run the below and then re-run ( if already run) MGtools and attach the C:\MGlogs.zip file from MGtools.

Download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )
Also since you say this is happening on 3 PCs, you likely had a DNS infection that got into your router. If you have a router hooked up then you need to follow the instructions for your hardware and reset it to factory default settings. Normally there is a recessed push button type switch that needs to be held down for some number of seconds to do this. After resetting to factory defaults on your router, you will need to reconfigure the router for your network if you have made any changes to the default network setup.

Thank you for your quick reply. I had run MGTools, but forgot to attach the log. Regardless, I have run TDSSkiller and rerun MGtools and attached both logs. Meantime, I have two questions:
Is the fact that my other two computers are infected likely to cause difficulties? I am not set up for file sharing, but am I likely to reinfect this computer while on the same home network as the other two infected computers?
Also, I read that I should not do any online banking or shopping with my computers in the state they are in. Should I put off any such activities until the issues are resolved?
    Thanks again,
    Neal

Is the PC you ran TDSSkiller still working okay. The first time you ran TDSSkiller it indicated a bunch of legit files that were not signed and normally these should all be signed. And you elected to ignore them which probably was a safer thing to do. Then you ran TDSSkiller a second time and fixed these unsigned files and related registry keys and this may have broken many drivers/services that you need.

It still could allow infections to spread. Less like with file sharing off but do you ever copy files between PCs via other methods (like CD, USB flash drives...etc)? And some infections will get into routers and spread to other PCs.

It would be best to wait to make sure all PCs are cleaned. However do note that there is never a guarantee that a PC is 100% clean. Even after a reinstall, once you connect to the internet again, there is still no guarantee you are clean.;)

Yes the PC is working. It wouldn't load Windows until I selected the load last good version. I have re-run TDSSKiller and attached a new log.

I have used the same thumb drive on all three PCs. I will scrap it -- it is very old and they are cheap now.
What can I do to clear the router, just in case?
I will be very careful with my e-commerce activities.

What I said at the end of message # 2?

Are you still having problems with redirects?

Sorry, I missed the router instructions the first time around. I reset it and I have tested all three computers. They all are working fine. Thanks very much for your help.

    You're welcome.

    Excellent! :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
