First the system info, then the problem.....

    Windows XP Pro

1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon Processor (128 kb primary mem cache, 256 kb secondary mem cache)

128 MB Ram (Belarc shows the ram but Belarc says Slot A0, A1, A2, A3 are empty, does not say which slot the ram is in).

    40 Gb HD (35 free)

msconfig and opened start up and turned off almost everything and still get:

    System Info:
Total Physical Memory - 127.48 MB
Available Physical Memory - 25.37 MB
Total Virtual Memory - 435.29 MB
Available Virtual Memory - 166.47 MB

If he tries to open more than one program, he gets a not enough memory to run this program message.
I ran anti virus Norton and AVG
    I ran Ad-Aware and Spybot
Shut down start up menu items
    deleted the cache files
    practically no change

    any ideas?

Well 128MB is the bare minimum needed to run windows xp. Having xp and running multiple programs with only 128mb is really not going to happen. Especially if one of the programs requires a good amount of memory.

I would suggest at least haveing 256MB of memory. 512MB seems to be the standard now. so if your mother board could support it, that would be the way to go.

If you are using XP, it is critical to have at LEAST 256MB of RAM.
