While no one on "Star Trek" actually said the phrase, "Beam me up, Scotty," is considered one of the most famous phrases to come from a television show.

For nearly four decades, James Doohan has been the heart and soul of Star Trek. But now the Trek community is mourning his passing. He was 85.

Doohan died early Wednesday morning, following complications from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease, the Associated Press reported.

The beloved actor retired from the convention circuit last year after it was disclosed that he was suffering from Alzheimer's, a debilitating disease that took the life of former President Ronald Reagan last year.

James Montgomery Doohan was born was born March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, B.C. When he was just 19, Doohan joined the Canadian military, and was part of the artillery contingent that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day during World War II. While on that mission, he was shot six times, including one bullet that severed the middle finger from his right hand. He would later conceal that hand onscreen.

Doohan auditioned for "Star Trek" in 1966, and being a master of dialects, tried at least seven before he and creator Gene Roddenberry settled on the famous Scottish accent that would define his character of Capt. Montgomery Scott for decades.

Doohan ended up appearing in three seasons of the original "Star Trek," as well as seven Star Trek movies between 1977 and 1994. He made a special appearance on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1992, and reportedly tried to get cast as a regular on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

Last August, Doohan finally was honored with a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. By that time, the actor had appeared in more than 50 different television and movie projects, and had been a popular attraction at conventions. He also is known to have been the person to develop an early rudimentary version of the Klingon language used in the series.

Doohan had four children with his first wife, Janet Young, to whom he was married for 15 years until their divorce in 1964. He wouldn't marry again until 10 years later, when he exchanged vows with Wende in 1974. She survives.

He and Wende had three children, including two adult sons, and a baby girl that was born April 11, 2000, when he was 80 years old.

    May he rest in peace.....

Actually, I just saw an article in which his ashes will be launched up into space, just like Gene Roddenberry. A nice tribute. :)

God speed Scotty . . . tell Bones hello for us. Star Trek lured me into the technical side of reality, and will always have a special place in my heart. Especially the character of Scotty . . . I am very sad at Mr. Doohan's passing.

"He's not really dead, as long as we remember him . . . " (quote from Dr. Mcoy at the end of the movie 'The Wrath of Khan').
