No network connection - Aluroot detected in afd.sys

I'm working on this for a friend so I'm not sure how and when it started. When I first got the computer Internet Explorer would open to a redirected start page on a seemingly functional Local network connection but after installing and scanning with Avast, afd.sys was detected as "Win32:Aluroot [Rtk]" and was moved to the Avast virus chest. Seems like from that point forward, making a local network connection (wireless or wired) results in "Limited or no connectivity". Major Geeks malware removal process completed and logs are attached. I have a few extra Malwarebytes logs from scans prior to the MG malware removal process that may still be relevant so I'll try to attach them as a second post.

Followed process at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=230267 but none of that did anything for me. MBRCheck sees valid Windows 7 MBR.

DHCP service is not running and will not start due to dependency missing. I believe that is related to the afd.sys from what I've read.

remaining MBAM scan logs and MBRCheck log. MBAM logs show mostly "No action taken" but there are a couple toward the bottom that were actually quarantined.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

We will do a partial fix only as we will need a scan from another tool to complete your fixes.

So here is the partial fix.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: WhiteSmoke Bar Toolbar - {167d9323-f7cc-48f5-948a-6f012831a69f} - C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke_Bar\prxtbWhit.dll
    O2 - BHO: WhiteSmoke Bar - {167d9323-f7cc-48f5-948a-6f012831a69f} - C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke_Bar\prxtbWhit.dll
    O2 - BHO: DealScout - {467013BB-D67E-45BE-A7D7-C29E3CCA8AAD} - C:\Program Files\DealScout\dealscout.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: WhiteSmoke Bar Toolbar - {167d9323-f7cc-48f5-948a-6f012831a69f} - C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke_Bar\prxtbWhit.dll
O23 - Service: McAfee Validation Trust Protection Service (mfevtp) - McAfee, Inc. - C:\Windows\system32\mfevtps.exe
    O23 - Service: Wpsscannersvc (tcsd_win32.exe) - Unknown owner - \\.\globalrootC:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (file missing)
    O23 - Service: Updater Service for StartNow Toolbar - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\StartNow Toolbar\ToolbarUpdaterService.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 23
    WhiteSmoke Bar Toolbar
    WhiteSmokeTranslator

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Please download OTL by OldTimer.

  4. dru3692

    dru3692 Private E-2

These are missing from the list in C:\MGTools\analyse.exe

    O2 - BHO: WhiteSmoke Bar - {167d9323-f7cc-48f5-948a-6f012831a69f} - C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke_Bar\prxtbWhit.dll

    O2 - BHO: DealScout - {467013BB-D67E-45BE-A7D7-C29E3CCA8AAD} - C:\Program Files\DealScout\dealscout.dll

    O3 - Toolbar: WhiteSmoke Bar Toolbar - {167d9323-f7cc-48f5-948a-6f012831a69f} - C:\Program Files\WhiteSmoke_Bar\prxtbWhit.dll

After running Fix for the items that remain, uninstalling Java 6 Update 23, when trying to uninstall WhiteSmokeTranslator I receive an error message "Error launching CheckLockedWsDictFiles.exe" therefore the uninstallation gets Aborted as unsuccessful.

Waiting for next advice before proceeding with OT.

Still not getting an address from DHCP so still no network or internet connection. afd.sys still has several entries in the virus chest of Avast. Have not seen any normal signs of malware, like popups, but the original problem really just revolved around browser redirects which I haven't been able to test at all since avast quarantined the afd.sys files.

Are you sure that you created the OTL fix properly. The log showed:
Did you have anything in front of the :OTL text?

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  10. dru3692

    dru3692 Private E-2

fixme.reg successfully edited the registry. Ran Windows Repair successfully. System restarted. Logged in and pulled IP address from DHCP successfully. Access to internet now, so the initial browser redirect seems to be gone and back to normal. Posting this reply from the troubled laptop itself for the first time since starting this thread. Attaching MGlogs.zip. Please let me know if I need to do anything further.

Yes you have a bunch more to do as the previous OTL fix never worked. Let's take a different approach.

    Download and run the below

    McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

    and then reboot your PC.

    After reboot, continue.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Right-click OTM.exe and select Run as administrator to run it.
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

Everything still seems to be functioning properly. Only thing I've noticed now that I have internet again is sluggish response time of the laptop in general. Boot speed seems fine but Windows seems slow. Although, this isn't my laptop and it's got an Intel Atom so sluggish UI might be normal.

May just be your PC specs. You have less than 1/3 of the minimum memory I recommend for proper running of Windows 7. Your logs show the below
    Code:
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory 0.99 GB
    Available Physical Memory 209 MB
Of you 1 GB, 0.01 GB was probably taken for the on board video graphics card which is why Total Physical only shows 0.99 GB. Having only 209 MB free can make normal opeartion slow down especially when you start to run more than one program. In addition, you have a older slower single core processor. Running newer versions of all software ( Windows, antivirus/antimalware,...etc ) really requires newer faster PCs with more memory in order to run efficiently.

    Your logs are clean.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. You can uninstall RogueKiller and HitManPro.
    2. Go back to step 4 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

This is a great service you are providing to the general public. Not sure I would have been able to make it this far without reinstalling Windows. Thank you very much for your help.
