    G'day.

Just wondering what to do when a thread/question gets no replies. Is there a time limit after which I can post the same question again?

I have seen other unanswered threads disappear off the bottom of the page too. Could there maybe be a page where these things are stored, so you can go there and see what hasn't had a reply (or been resolved) yet? To avoid old stuff piling up, posters could be required to renew their post once a week, say. If it doesn't get renewed, it drops out.

Also, there doesn't seem to be anywhere to post questions like this one.

    Hi

No, no time limit on any thread, the thread or question more need to have someone read it who knows the answer, if no-one does then sadly the question will go unanswered. In the majority of times its down to the thread title and the question, if the thread title is poor say for arguments sake "help me" then this is all too often posted and many tech folk will ignore them sadly. If the question is vague like " I have an error in IE... help" then that too is vague and while many, myself included will try and post a question to that question in, What OS and SP, what errors, give us a step by step, what applications are involved etc etc etc to get more info.

The devil sadly is in the details as many many of the tech folk who post have busy lives and will answer what they can within that time, as forums are not paying jobs.

I wouldnt post the question again but say after a week (rule of thumb as bumping within a day or so is not good on forums) then bump the thread with a post sayin something like "I still have this issue and I have tried this this and this to resolve it can anyone help?" or somesuch variation on that, if the initial post is vague then it needs more info to be added, with what has already been tried, any error messages etc... more input is good as it may trigger someones memory into saying "hey I think I have an idea on that"

Nope as this would become messy and take too much of the admins time to move around, we have a devil of a time moving threads to right areas, deleting spam and junk and answering questions as it is to add a new task, although I apprieciate the question and its a goodun, but sadly some questions will always go un-answered. By having users re-new their questions weekly will just add duplicate questions into the forum, this will not in many instances still get a question but will just add to the size of the forum database for no reason, thus forum gets slower and the question may still not be answered. I do try and go back to the last page I was reading in all of the forum catagories to pickup zero post threads, but I dont know everything and will not guess to an answer if I dont know it fully or can follow up if another question is posted as another issue to same question pops up, all to easy to google a similar issue, but if you dont know the background of the issue you can leave the poster in more of a mess than not answering the question in the first place.

Also many new members who post questions also do this on many other forums as it is, so they may never come back to Majorgeeks for an answer, this happens alot in malware forum and issues.

Hope my personal thoughts and not one of a the Admins as a collective answers some questions, the other admins and the owners woudl ahve to chime in too, to add their thoughts.

    Thanks Halo. Very helpful.

The thread of mine that had no replies was actually a question about a difficulty I was having with chaslang's sticky instructions for copying user info into a new account. The obvious person to answer it was chaslang, but I guess he didn't see it. I PM'd him after a while, but he pointed out that that was a no-no. I wanted to apologise to him for my error, but that would have required another PM! :-o So I just watched my post disappear. I'll take your suggestion and revive it.

I for one am aware of that, and I am very grateful for help I have received from MG. I have tried to help out a bit with some posts as a way of returning the favour a bit. I seem to drift towards the threads that have no replies, as I've been there and done that, and because I guess what I can do might be better than no help at all. Had a little bit of success, I'm happy to say - sometimes it's just getting people to give more of that devilish detail, which bumps the post as well, so that others can help out.

I actually had in mind something more like a check box on the post that becomes unchecked after say two days, and needs to be re-checked by day 7 or the post disappears. That keeps just the one post there, but keeps it updated. It would require some re-jigging, of course, and I realise that would require more of someone's time.

Hmm... I guess I've seen that in some of the threads I've tried to help with. People don't come back and say their problem has been resolved. it would be nice (and polite) if they did, rather than leaving you wondering (preaching to the converted her, of course).

BTW, it might also be helpful if people graded themselves on their computer knowledge when they post a question. You would then have a better idea of whether they need extensive software help, or whether they just need to be told to make sure the computer's plugged in and turned on.

PS Some of this would be good in a sticky, as I have seen other people wondering about these same things.

    Thanks again for reply. :)

    Hi

Thanks and glad some of it was helpful.

If your thread is in malware forum then that is one area not to bump a thread as it will drop the thread and question to the back of the work queue as the Malware forum is the only one that has such rules, and threads on page 10+ are going to be answered quicker than ones on page 1.

Absolutly as just asking a simple question or two can add heaps of info to a thread, even down to someone say in Drivers forum attaching an Everest log as this can help a tech find the right info quicker than asking a novice to PCs to find the info, its all down to working out the users experience from the post and tailoring your reply accordingly, which is why in some cases I will go the extra mile and do some screenshot steps to help.

While a great thought, it would require the forum software to have this addon, as not easy to program one from scratch without breaking the forum.

Yes indeed, its a problem the internet forum wide, users just dont in the majority come back to say thanks that solved my issue, some do and this is superb. We also added a Thanks option as you have noticed that goes a "small" way to try and address this, not perfect but is a start.

I have seen this done before and majority of users rate themselfs as experts or gurus ;) however at times you can judge what level a user is at or that could just be my inbuilt psychic abilities!

Will try and draft up some thoughts on this and float it by the admin team on a sticky.

But really good questions and thoughts GCWesq on this topic so thanks for your help in many threads and hope your issue gets sorted out quickly, forums are for sharing and here at Majorgeeks we do and will give all members questions on the running of the forum due concideration.

    Thanks again for thoughtful reply.

My thread was in software, as it wasn't a malware issue. I thought it would be a bit cheeky to put it in malware, just to catch chaslang's attention.

    Understood.

The terms and the wording used give it away a bit, don't they. The rest - I guess, and you psyche.

    Thanks again.
