no search function, can't click on links, spam detected

recently downloaded Windows XP SP2 and started having issues. Got numerous pop-ups, couldn't access taskbar, no search button, can't click-on some links from search engines or websites in Internet explorer. I have followed all the steps and downloaded and scanned all programs suggested, but am still having these issues. I also can't seem to manage attachments as I can't click on links. I've been right clicking links>properties>copying the url and pasting to the address bar. That doesn't seem to work for the attachements.

Not sure what to do next??????????

Please help. I've spent about 10+ hours trying to fix these issues so far and am feeling very frustrated to say the least!

Also forgot to add that my cable company sent me notice that it had detected spam being sent from my location and that I was in violation of my contract. Said I needed to get it fixed or my account would be suspended/canceled. Eek!

 

I seemed to be encountering more problems just trying to fix my pc, so ending up restoring it to factory settings. I had to download all programs again, but it took less time than the fix was going to take. It's now running well and I have AVG running all the time to try to keep it that way. Thanks for your response and help.
