No Signal At Monitor But....

Software I'm generally ok with but hardware I definitely need help! Suddenly we have no signal on the monitor in our 'office' when it's connected to our 'main' pc, but if I connect the monitor to a different PC then everything is fine. However if I access the main system remotely from my laptop I can see its screen and adjust its settings, though not to the same high 1920 resolution as previously. Max now is 1600.

I'm guessing the display adapter has failed and the system is falling back to the integrated graphics on the mobo, and if this was onscreen we could manage with it. However the display only shows 'No signal', we can't live with that.

    Any help much appreciated.

Try a different monitor on this main PC. Swap cables too.

I use a KVM switch to switch the monitor between computers. It has always worked perfectly but had to completely disconnect everything for recarpeting. It was during reconnecting that this happened. I don't have a spare monitor and don't intend getting one when the existing one can be seen to work perfectly. How do I force the system to use the integrated graphics?

EDIT - to prove the cables were OK I switched the kvm connections. Nothing changed - still no signal when connected to main PC, perfect on wife's PC.

The point of trying a 2nd monitor is to verify the card/port is bad. Note that most TVs support computer input.

Surely by switching the KVM connections it does the same?

Remove the monitor from the KVM switch and attach it just to your computer. Do you get a display?

It might be a strange twist of coincidence that the video card failed at the same time you removed the cabling. It does happen.
(I replaced RAM and the computer booted once then not again. The power supply decided to die after I replaced the RAM!)

With the network's main PC now unusable I had a rather sleepless night, as our entire working method was unavailable. The main thing on my mind was to do exactly what you have suggested - remove the KVM and connect the monitor directly. I was sorely tempted to get up at 3AM and try it, but my wife would not have been too sympathetic! However it has actually made no difference at all and the PC is presently unusable. I have spent today configuring a workaround and my NAS has had to earn its money. As of now we are operational again and I am not under any pressure to get the PC repaired. Phew!

I'm like you Earthling. When I discover a problem, I can't sleep worrying about it. I probably would have tried something at 3am. Fortunately my husband can sleep through almost anything so he might not have noticed.
