I upgraded this computer. It was a Compaq Presario 4780 and it was windows 95. Wiped the hard drive clean and installed windows 98. Well, it still was'nt running that great so I put some memory sticks in and all of a sudden we have no program sounds. The only sounds we have is when you put a cd in it plays.I am stumped! Please help!

Makes no sense from installing memory. Is it ok in device manager? No conflicts or yellow exclamation points? Did you check sound settings to default sounds? Couple places to start.

Hey there thanks for replying. Yes there is an exclamation point and its called "wave device for voice modem". I have tried to update the driver many times from windows update and the win 98 disk, no luck. How do you check sound settings to default sounds? We can play a cd and the cd player works but not windows media player and none of the system sounds work. All there is....is static. Your help would be appreciated here, I'm stumped...I thought maybe I might have unplugged something when I put the memory sticks in? I was thinking of taking the side off the machine and checking the sound card to see what kind it is and updating the driver?

If your Windows systems ever seems to go "haywire" looking for a Wave Device for Voice Modem (trying to install it but can't find it, or trying to install it every time you boot up your computer), this may be of some help:

The Driver is not part of your modem support files, and is not part of the sound card support files - the driver needed comes with Windows. If you are prompted for a file location when installing the wave driver for voice modem, you need to direct to your Windows CD or pre-load!

The Wave Device allows a voice modem to send and receive audio to the sound card via the system bus (no cable is needed between the modem and sound card).

The "Wave Device" installation is controlled by an .inf file supplied with your modem. If this .inf file has been removed, edited, or isn't the correct one for your modem, you may have a problem.

Additionally, the modem name (device %Serial.DeviceDesc%) in the .inf file must match exactly the modem name as appearing in ControlPanel->Modems. The .inf file will specify registry entries to be made (if your registry is damaged you may have a problem); and Microsoft drivers supplied with Windows95/98 will be required; if these Microsoft drivers are not already installed on your system, it will need to get them from either the original Microsoft Win95/98 CD or vendor pre-load to your hard drive. If you deleted these files, or don't have the original Microsoft CD, you may have difficulty.

The .inf file that controls the wave device installation:

    LT Win Modem = ltwave.inf
    3Com/USR Winmodems = 3comwave.inf
    Rockwell/Conexant = wavrss.inf

Unistall your modem and remove the
'Wave Device for Voice Modem' from the Device Manger. Shut down, physically remove the modem from the computer, reboot. Make sure the modem and 'Wave Device for Voice Modem' is not displayed in the Device Manager, shutdown. Reinstall your modem, reboot. Install the modem drivers.

All the sounds worked before I put those memory sticks in.

Yes, I know. Your sound most likely isn't working becuase the drivers for the 'Wave Device for Voice Modem' are corrupt. Unistall the drivers for your modem, remove the modem and 'Wave Device for Voice Modem' from the device manger, shut down the computer. Physically remove the modem from the computer, reboot, make sure the modem and 'Wave Device for Voice Modem' are not displayed in the device manager. Does the sound work? Reinstall your modem, reboot, and install the drivers. Does your sound work?

I am downloading that program and i'll send it back. thanks. I hope I uninstalled the modem right. I looked for it on the list in device manager and removed it. It seemed to work. I wasn't sure of any other way of uninstalling it. I'll report back soon.

Your System Summary Report shows 2 different modems:

    Compaq Presario 288-DF Modem
    Compaq Presario 336-VSC Modem

Do you have 2 modems installed?

This DRIVER will work for both modems?

    videogurl Corporal

No there isn't 2 modems, I guess I might have installed both drivers on this computer. I had wiped the hard drive quite awile ago, it was a win 95,and I installed win 98 and I had to download a driver for the modem to work. Maybe it has become corrupt? I will try this driver that you sent me. Thanks.

Make sure you unistall the drivers for the other modems first.

    Still is'nt working...maybe I need a new sound card?

Sound Card just might me bad. Your's is on-board audio; so, you would have to disable the audio in the bios when you install a sound card.

Which brings to mind the idea that just for kicks, you might want to take a look into your bios and see what kind of setting(s) you have for your sound, before going to any added expense.
