We had a virus problem last month. Our Kaspersky 6.0 wasn't able to detect the virus because it's not updated, we didn't have internet connection until last week. The virus had corrupted important files of some applications and we ended up having trouble installing new softwares, so we then decided to repair the OS using the Windows installation CD. It went well. Programs are now running smoothly and we're able to install new softwares. But here's the problem: WMP cannot play audio files. We get this error "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly." Volume control is also missing from the system tray. In the Device Manager, there's a yellow exclamation mark on "Realtek High Definition Audio". We installed Realtek Driver from the mobo CD -- No go. Got an onboard audio. Mobo is ECS 671T-M. Help please...

By the way, we still got the same problem after installing the driver from the Realtek website. If this might help, here are the things under "Sound,Video and Game Controllers" in our Device Manager (I also attached the actual window):
    - Audio Codecs
    - Audio Codecs
    - Legacy Audio Drivers
    - Legacy Video Capture Devices
    - Media Control Devices
    - Realtek High Definition Audio ** (with a yellow excamation mark)
    - Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
    - Video Codecs

I'm not sure if one of these is causing the problem... Do you think I should uninstall/remove all of them and reinstall Realtek?

ok mate hows you,....ok heres what you gotta do to get the sound working,..just download everest home edition,..its free,..either from the downloads section in major geeks or just google 'download everest home edition'

and you should be able to get it,....

install it and then run it and bascially just loo throught the computer summary report and then somewhere in there there should be sound driver and then an option to download the current drivers so just goto the site that it gives you make sure you download the correct type of drivers its fairly straight forward so goodlluck and i hope it works!!

If you double click on the Yellow exclamation point in Device Manager it should bring up a properties window.
It should tell you what the problem is with the Sound Device that is giving you the error.
If you can not repair it from this information, can you post a screenshot (like the one you attached to your post) of the resulting window?

First look in Device manager under the System section. Look for either MS UAA Bus driver or Realtek HD Audio Controller. Is there a yellow ? or ! beside it?
If there is a problem there right click and uninstall it, then right click and scan for hardware changes. If it is OK, then go to Sound, Video, and Game Controllers, right click and uninstall Realtek HD Audio, then right click again and scan for hardware changes. If that doesn't solve the problem, attach your Everest report here.
Post the make and model # if your PC is manufactured (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.) or your motherboard ID, if it is a build. Or even better:
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers. Upload the report as an attachment
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.
