No sound and desperate for help

I'm pretty sure I deleted something I shouldn't have during a virus scan, so it's my own stupid fault that I'm having this problem - live and learn!

I had sound last week, now I have no sound. No sound icon showing. In devices it says no playback devices. Audio codecs has various things listed, but legacy codec has nothing (however I don't have a clue as to what should be there!)

Please help! Hopefully I've run Everest correctly.

Did you try a System Restore???:confused

 

I did. The first restore date which I selected just before the problem began, didn't help. So I tried to set earlier dates with no luck - it would tell me it couldn't be set and nothing had been changed. Last night I managed to set one to a week ago, but still no sound.

I'm pretty sure I've tried most of the suggestions posted on the web. I just don't know what to do next?

 

Thanks, but I fixed it. After trying for days, and then spending -literally- all day working on it yesterday, I fluked it. I think the problem was in an explorer update, because after I deleted the last handful, restarted, sound came back.
