NO sound following system recovery

    Hello all....

I was presented with this machine and have come across quite an interesting dillema I'm hopefull someone can assist me with.

I've have twice done a full system restore from the cds provided by the manufacturer, which was supposed to give me a fresh "out-of-the-box" system. Every single setting is where it is supposed to be, power to speakers is on & the correct port is being used for speaker output yet no sound can be heard nor does SoundMax show listed in the device manager under "Sounds".

The listings under Sounds in Device Manager:
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Devices
    Video Codecs

When I attempted to re-load the drivers a message stated drivers were already loaded and did I want to overwrite. I clicked yes and while the install began it suddenly stopped after I responded to a warning that my system would need to re-boot. The install process hung to the point where I had to manually kill the process to get it to close (the "x'' was greyed out leaving me with no ability to "x-out" even though the minimize and windows size button were functional.

The message that appeared when the program did close was: "An error occurred while launching the setup - The remote procedure call failed"

When I attempted to load the drivers while in Safe Mode and I got a "computer contains wrong model info" message and that was it,install closed.

The Windows Audio service is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

Remote Procedure Call is "Started" & set to "Automatic"

Remote Procedure Call Locator is set to "Manual" & NOT started

The BIOS on-board sound is enabled.

I ran sfc with no issues noted

I was able to re-load the Chipset Driver w/no problem

I have noticed throughout the entire process there is no listing in device manager under "Sounds" for SoundMax. The only listings are for the codecs & drivers and no where to be found is the happy yellow " ! "

This machine is free of any virus, malware, spyware, trojan or ANY other type of "outside" interference that could be considered the cause of issue.

The one thing I have also noticed is that this machine runs far too slow for it's processor speed and I'm wondering if there's some tie-in involved. I have seen the cpu usage meter peak when nothing is going on.

Any suggestions or assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

    Thx in advance..
    DG

My (edited) Everest report:(Sorry not in txt format. I am not home and can't attach a full report)

I also found something very interesting...

When I ran the defrag I noticed that my "C" drive is the smaller volume drive where "C" is @ 15.6gb FAT32 File System), "D" is @ 41.63gb NTFS File System.

Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the larger drive of the 2 supposed to be desiginated as the "C" drive??

And could this be where the situation I'm having currently be a by-product of what I just found concerning the drive sizes?

I am SO ready to loft this thing thru a wall!!

    Anyone? Buehler?

Not sure about your sound issue, but the C drive should be the Master or Boot Drive normally. If you are using IDE drives, C would be the Master, and D the slave, set by jumpers on the drives themselves.

For the sound issue, sorry I am not much help, but try downloading this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4387.html

See what sound card it comes up with and google the name and try those drivers. Sorry I can't help more.

This isn't right. It appears that the modem sound elements are the only thing loaded.

    If this is a Sony VAIO RX540 machine, the sound driver is here;

Not necessarily. Any drive large enough to hold the required boot files can be the boot drive.

Many recovery partitions are FAT32, simply because the recovery process usually starts in DOS, and DOS can't read NTFS. And many recoveries (re)load the O/S as FAT32.

"And could this be where the situation I'm having currently be a by-product of what I just found concerning the drive sizes?"

    I doubt it.

    Dan,

    Thanks for responding...

    Where the drivers are concerned..

"When I attempted to re-load the drivers a message stated drivers were already loaded and did I want to overwrite. Something is just not right with this pc. It seems waaaay to slow and every process is delayed far to long. I have nothing abnormal running in the background so I'm somewhat at a loss. Do you think any of these issues are BIOS related?

I realize it's just easier to spend a few bucks on an actual sound card and be done with it but now it's become a mission. I HAVE to know why this is happening.

    Any thoughts?
