no sound from computer

running xp pro, gigabyte MB-GA-MA78GM-S2H, about 2 months ago sound
disappeared, so I recently installed a sound card. I disabled the sound in Bios
but still have no sound. Any help would be appreciated

Some generics: check your Device Manager, make sure there are no warnings...make sure sounds are turned on...make sure your speakers are working...

If all things Windows look good, then this sounds like a driver issue - need to know the sound card info...

Here's a link to Gigabyte's MB driver page - walk through the menus (I didn't know if you have Ver. 1 or 1.1 - don't know if it matters), download/reinstall your chipset drivers, and try the onboard sound again...

One thing to check:

Go to Start, Run, type in services.msc and press enter/return. Check in the list of services and make sure Windows Audio is present, started, and set to "Automatic."

If it isn't there or isn't running and you can't start it, post back and we can get it squared away.

Sometimes malware, or just badly written software when uninstalled, can corrupt this part of the registry. Without this service running, no audio device will work properly, if at all.

To Caliban: I haven't had a recent viral attact, that I am aware of anyway. I have zone alarm, run avg 9.0, ad aware, and a couple of other things on a fairly regular basis.
