Friends: I have a Dell 731 MHz computer with a OptiPlex GX110 chipset. The sound card is built-in. I can't get any sound, don't see any speaker icon in the taskbar or see the sound card in multimedia, even though I see it in device manager. The sound works fine with Windows XP. Dell technical support is of no help...only having me downloading a zillion files which do nothing but take up space. Could someone point me to a good third party sound troubleshooter software for Windows 98? Thanks for any help.

Ed: A million thanks for your help. I tried the driver you sent but it did not work like all the other drivers pushed by Dell techs. The sound card shows up in Device Manager but strangely not in Multimedia, even the speaker icon is grayed out. Dell was telling me to replace the mobo. But I know the sound chipset was OK because when I dual boot the same system with XP the sound was just great, so I knew AD1881 chipset was good and so are my speakers and connections. I took the next step which was install XP over 98SE which I was afraid to do for fear of losing my music files. Anyways, I went ahead and everything is fine now. I still don't know why Win 98 did not work but I guess the ends justify the means. Great sound now. Thanks again my friend. All the best to you.

  6. the problem you were having was with the drivers from 98. The rayed out speaker was that a driver was not installed for it and dell is picky about there drivers. If you went to the Dell web site and looked up you 110 is should of had a driver for it...Should anyway from here....http://support.dell.com/ Just follow the instructions for system -model -OS....the chose the right driver....
