I have no audio on this Toshiba Laptop A105-S4074 (.mp3, .flv, .avi, .mp4, etc.)
Also no audio on the internet; e.g. youtube.com etc)
No audio sounds in the system (start up, shut down, low battery warning, etc.)

    Hardware, system, and anti-malware/anti virus:

    Windows XP media center sp3
AVG Free 2013 up to date
MalwareBytes (up to date) Scan – Clean
    CC Cleaner OK
    Advanced System Care 6
    2 GB RAM (Maxed out)
Microsoft update – up to date

    Toshiba Laptop A105-S4074
    500 GB HD

RealTek HD sound with 5.10.0.6873 driver

    Under Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device manager:

In device mgr there are yellow exclamation marks under: sound, video, and game controllers

The yellow exclamation marks precede Realtek high definition audio
    Video codecs

    Under Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device manager:
Under properties: Windows cannot find the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)

Also under settings - control panel - sounds and audio devices, the message is: “No sound device”. Everything else is grayed out (except under “sounds”, which is set to windows default). When I choose “advanced settings” – properties – the message: “Windows cannot find the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)” appears again.

I have uninstalled the Realtek Driver from add/remove programs many times and restarted the laptop. After reboot I get an Error message from Found New Hardware Wizard: “There was a problem installing your new hardware.”

When I try to manually force a new driver, I get the same negative results.

Numerous times I have tried the *update driver* function both before and after uninstalling the old driver in control panel/add-Remove Programs).

Additionally, I have uninstalled all the devices that had the yellow exclamation marks in Device Manager: sound, video, and game controllers, but on reboot they return.

    Other remedies tried

So far I have went to Microsoft update website and installed the latest security updates
Installed the latest Intel Chip driver updates.

I have run full scan with AVG (free), CC Cleaner, Advanced System Care, Malwarebytes, and AVG anti-virus, Kaspersky’s latest rootkit remover TDSSkiller.exe, McAfee rootkitremover.exe, Malwarebytes Anti Malware, and others. Ran Hitman Pro – No Malware and only a few tracking cookies which were deleted.
Malware Bytes: Full Scan: No Objects Detected

For many days and over 30 times I have tried uninstalling, rolling back, and/or updating the Realtek drivers from previous versions. I even tried going back to the Toshiba original drivers (2007), but the driver installation always fails.

Uninstalling the old realtek driver and installing the latest driver and forcing it to find specific drivers did not work as did allowing windows to pick the best driver. The message was ,that I already had the latest driver installed. Still no sound and the yellow exclamation points still exist in device driver.
Rolling back the drivers often freezes the process and hangs up the laptop.

A large sin was running ComboFix, which did find a zero rootkit. But now I do not know how to proceed with safety. I am grateful for any advice.

Specifically, after uninstalling the Realtek HD Audio Drivers via add/remove programs and rebooting, the “found new hardware wizard” appears. If I choose to automatically install drivers it searches the HD Audio Bus for a minute, but finishes with “There was a problem installing this hardware. REALTEK HD AUDIO. Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39).

    Hi

very detailed post, thank you and you have tried alot of what I would have suggested in re-install chipset and reboot then install the original audio driver form toshiba.

A few things to try are, if you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot) does audio work?
Try this troubleshooter HERE and see if it highlights any issues.

Thank you, David. Will try your suggestions and get back to you. Would you clarify one procedure. By "re-install chipset and reboot then install the original audio driver form toshiba." Do you mean to uninstall the existing intel chipset drivers or the UMA driver and reinstall them, or will a reboot after an uninstall automatically reinstall them? As you know, I have been using the updated Realtek HD Drivers for years up until this time.
Going to reboot now in safe mode and also try the troubleshooter now.
    Much appreciated.

Sorry, by UMA driver, I meant doyou want me to reinstall the Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for HD Audio? I disabled that before and then uninstalled it. Upon reboot it reinstalled itself.

In safe mode, control panel/sounds and audio devices/ the top message was "no audio device"

I ran the Windows Audio Playback Troubleshooter (thanks), in regular mode.
Message #1: "There is a problem with Realtek High Definition Audio. The device is not working properly. Attempts to repair it have failed. If the problem persists please contact your manufacturer for driver and compatibility support."

    next

Message #2: We detected some problems with your system and were able to successfully apply the fixes. However, our verification shows that the problem still exists."

Please clarify the "re-install chipset" directions specifically. I do have the old (2007) Realtek driver from Toshiba, and had in the past attempted to install it aftr uninstalling the previous/updated Realtek HD drivers from both add/remove software and from system/hardware/device manager.

    Thanks
    Don

Sorry, for the non-specific URL I can't copy the specific link URL to the intel chip drivers download page. Should I proceed to re-installing the intel chipset drivers?
