    Hi guys,

I recently re-vamped my computer installing Windows SP2 Pro. However I can't get the sound to work on my computer. I tried installing the Asus sound drivers on the asus website, but that won't work. I installed a sound card and the req. software, and that isn't working either. Is there something I'm missing? I was under the impression when I install windows, I should automatically have sound w/o installing all sorts of drivers.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Signature is supposed to be showing below:

My speakers work fine. There is integrated sound, although even when I plug in my soundblaster live 5.1 card, I still can't get anything. I don't know if it helps to know this, but the little speaker that is usually on the lower taskbar, isn't even there. This is what makes me think I have a driver problem, and that I need a driver, but when I download the file I get here:
    http://support.asus.com.tw/download/download.aspx?modelname=A7V8X-X&SLanguage=en-us
I still don't get the little speaker on the taskbar.

I still don't get the little speaker on the taskbar...

To get the speaker in the taskbar goto control pannel then Sound and audio devices and tick the Place volume in taskbar click apply then double click on the speaker and check if one of them is on MUTE if yes un-tick apply...

See that's just it (this is the part where I wish I could just say "ah! yes that's it!").

The whole section Device Volume where that box is, (and it is there), is faded out so that I can't select the option.

The greyed out sound control appears to indicate a poorly installed, or incompatabal driver.
Have you tried right click my computer, left click manage, left click device manager. Check sound video, and game controllers, to see if any are showing an exclamation. If one is , then try uninstalling the driver, close all windows, shut down computer, then check the soundcard is properly in its slot, and free of any external connections. Then restart , and windows should find the card, and, if supported will allot it a driver.
If no problem is shewn, try just uninstalling the sound driver, then shut down, and restart as above.
Another trick that I use could help, if this does not work, That is to unzip the downloaded driver to the driver cache in windows i386. Shut down, and restart, for windows to find it.

 Hi. A suggestion, here. Download Everest Free Edition or Belarc Advisor, and see what either of those tell you. Another is to go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and click on the Sounds tab. About a third of the way down, you should see "Sound Scheme", with a list box below it. Select "Windows Default", click Apply, then OK, and close out. Reboot and see what you get. Good night and good luck.

Maybe this is a dumb question, Dan -- but did you install the AD 1980 SoundMax drivers off the CD-ROM that comes with the motherboard? Or was that the file you got from the link you provided to the Asus site?

On my system, that's the driver package that provides the missing loudspeaker icon and the volume control applet. If you have it installed, try re-installing it. That worked for me once.

if you check your device manager you probably need to delete the sound ,after downloading the controller ac97 audio .you are probably having a video prob also this went away when i did the ac97 download but keep in mind after down loading and bfore installing delete the sound in device manager then reboot it will come up as new hardware brows to location you put download then install.good night and happy new year!

Another thought, Dan -- the manual for the Asus A7V8X-X board is less than clear about the FP_AUDIO headers (page 1-18, section 8 in my copy). If you have not connected any front-panel audio cables, make sure that jumpers are in place across the third and fifth pairs of pins in the header, counting from the rear of the case. If there is no front-panel connection and no jumpers, you'll get no audio from the rear panel jacks.

I forget what effect that has on the appearance of the Volume icon or applet provided by SoundMax -- if any.

If available, re-installing the original motherboard driver for sound, that came with the motherboard, would appear to be the best route, and getting the on-board driver working, for sound, before trying a sound card.
I often use www.driveragent.com to find missing/corrupt drivers. You get a free search of your computer, and advised updatable drivers. It is only a small fee to join, and get all your drivers, otherwise you can see for free which drivers are considered bad, or, outdated. This has solved many driver issues that I have had.
If nothing else has solved it, by now, I would suggest you try the free look ,see, bit, there.www.driveragent.com
