I have a p4s533 socket 478 motherboard. my sound doesn't work for anything. I have legacy audio drivers. I thought I had a virtimude virus, i'm not sure how to spell it. I used to have a message on my background that I couldn't move that said "warning, spyware/win32 virtimude and spyware/win32 virus" something or other. I followed another thread, and I ran highjackthis, spyware doctor, latest mcaffee antivirus, and spybot s&d. Also, lavasoft adware - which runs and then automatically restarts my computer after 45 seconds. Something is definitely wrong when my adware runs, maybe the virus or spyware has attatched itself to it, and when its detected it restarts my computer. I'll attach my highjackthis log, and please help me get back my sound. my computer also logs off after 2 minutes of inactivity, even though i have all my power settings turned on 'never'.

I forgot to say that when i go to my device manager, and I click on properties for my sound devices, all of them have a problem. I can't click or change my 'device usage' to enable or disable. the prompt is inactive - like I move my mouse over where I should be able to click on it, but it has become part of the backdrop, and nothing clicks. Also, when right click on my audio driver and devices there is no enable or disable option. and the troubleshoot is not helpful at all. Please help.

So I searched online for an answer to why my adware turns off my computer as well, and they said to change my settings by right clicking 'my computer' - properties - advanced - uncheck restart computer during system errors or failure. That didn't work, it still restarted my computer after running for 2 minutes.

THe best thing to do is check out the Malware READ & RUN ME and then post the required logs in that forum.

When they clear you of Malware, come back here and post an Everest attachment and we'll get your sound back. :)

Post a make and model # if your PC is manufactured (Dell, Gateway, HP, etc.)
Use Everest to get a report of your system’s hardware, OS, and drivers.
Upload the report as an attachment.
    Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181
When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Now come back here to your thread.
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box (near the bottom of the page), scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box.

Seems to me that the sound is the least of your problems. What good is hearing something if nothing else is working right. Follow musksnipe's link to the Malware Removal Guide, follow those steps EXACTLY as they are described. Then (if necessary) post in the Malware Removal Forum and the experts there can help you get your PC cleaned up. After they give you the "all clear", post again here and we'll get that driver working for you :-D

(BTW- do NOT create double thread like this: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=172274. It is against forum rules and is worse than bumping)

BTW#2- here's a direct link to your sound driver.... but you really should head over to the malware forum.

DlB, I Have run and completed all the maleware steps already, many times. No one has told me about my highjackthis report nor my everest report though. I also seem to have problems with your link you gave me, I download the zip file, but when I try to install it, I get cannot open keys, or cannot find setup. also, I noticed with trying to install it, on my task manager i see wowexec.exe trying to run. isn't that spyware? did you send me a link with maleware?

None of the regulars here would even think about doing that. We are here to help not hinder.
dlb is a very good member here, having helped 100's of people.
Usually, when recommending a .zip file I open it and take a look to see if all the parts seem to be there, as I'm sure he does too. Any obvious malware would be seen by us.
I just scanned that file with AVG and Malwarebytes and neither shows any malware in it.
And that is what you should also do before installing a direct download from anybody.
Lastly, that download is a link from ASUS.com, the maker of your motherboard, which dlb must have found from reading your Everest report.
I noticed that you have not posted anything in the malware forum. You can not be sure that you are totally clean, until they review your logs. We don't do Hijack logs here in the regular forums.
If you have malware floating around your system still, then chances are the driver can be corrupted again, either by the malware or the yet to be done cleansing of it.

Now have you extracted that file into another folder, then found the setup.exe and double clicked on it to start the install?

You never started a thread in malware and this is not a HJT reading forum....HJT is only a tool to help identify malware, not clean your system.

Everyone above has said all that needs to be said, except:
    1. it is assumed that you know how to install drivers if you are here requesting them; if you don't know, ask.
    2. I did look through both your HJT log and the Everest report; the driver link I gave you is directly to the correct driver listed in your Everest report (and it's not malware). Your HJT log shows several obvious infections, and that is why I (and everyone else) suggested you go to the malware removal forum. The HJT log was posted first, about 24 hours before I made any response whatsoever, so I am in no way responsible for any malware you have (the time line makes this impossible and I would never do that to anyone, EVER; I have over 4200 posts and over 175 "thank you's" and I can assure you that nobody says "thank you" for malware), and you mentioned you had an infection in your first post; obviously you never got rid of it.

    I'm out.

Thank you to everyone who has helped me so far. I have no maleware on my computer. I need to enable my sound devices, but there is no way to do that for me. under properties in my device manager, the device usage window is shadowed and part of the background, and my mouse moves over it but I can't click on it. Please help. Thank you.

I started to post the other day when I saw you were given a clean bill of health from TimW.
I think part of your problem is this:
The chipset driver should be installed before audio (or any other drivers)
The problem is I am finding no actual chipset driver. ASUS shows you have a SIS 651 (North Bridge) / SIS 952 (South Bridge) chipset. At SIS they show the 651 as a graphics driver. I can't find the 952 there. I did find it elswhere, but it's description is as an audio driver.
Anyway, give this a try: SiS SiS962 Audio driver

You are getting the shadowed areas because there is no driver installed or it is not recognized by the chipset.
Have you looked in the BIOS to ensure that onboard audio is Enabled?
Also, Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

Sometimes, the problem is in the Plug and Play, here is a cure for that:
And last, you have SP3. I don't believe the SIS 7012 is HD audio, but if it is you will need to fool XP into believing it is SP2 then install the driver.
If none of the above work, I will post how to fool XP.

Thank you for your help. I first did scenario 1, I had the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator installed excactly how you described, then i looked to see if my windows audio service was started like you said to check, and it was started and fine and on auto. I looked in my bios, everything seemed fine, maybe you could suggest what to look at in bios, maybe i'm forgetting something. I used your link for asus sis and it said I had to pay for the registered version, so i went to the asus homepage, and installed and updated my audio there, and something funny happened again, the exact same thing as before when DlB gave me the "direct link" to my driver update, i kept getting error messages that said can not locate keys, and continous pop up error messages until i went to my task manager and manually closed the operation. Anyone Please help.
