You should upload an Everest report as an attachment (do NOT post it 'inline' as it may be removed by a forum admin or moderator)

I had the same problem here are the symptoms and what I did to get my sound back. I would have to load my AC97 Realtek driver (cause my sound card wasn't being loaded, message said driver was corrupt). This would happen every third time I booted my PC up. I reloaded my AC97 Realtek driver and made it the default sound device in control panel open the "Sounds and Audio Devices", then open the "Audio" make sure your sound card is listed in the drop down boxes under "Sound Playback" and"Sound Recording" ("Sound Recording" will not have any affect on audio playback); set you sound card as your default device small box at bottom left. I then still had a problem. I was getting a unknown device loaded in my Sound Audio device drivers "Modem#2 line playback" (this all started after I downloaded an MP3 converter program, I downloaded a couple one from this site and one from Cocoon S/W). I went into my registry and deleted every line where this appeared. I believe that's what got rid of it. Then another device started showing up "Unimodem Half-Duplex Aidio Device" why this would show up in the audio devices I have no idea. Anyway I disabled it and everything seems to be working fine now. But I'm looking for advice as to how and if I should get rid of this device? It only appears in the device manager under the "Sound, video, and game controllers". Any way my sound is back now.

TRIZIA try going to this web site http://majorgeeks.com/download1385.html it will tell you everything you need to know about your PC. At least then you'll know if you're downloading the right driver or not. Plus its good information to alway to keep a record of.
